I caught The Omen (1976) the other night - still scary

The soundtrack, plot and overall creepiness makes this a top notch 70's horror flick. Where does the original Omen rank with all time horror movies?

The Omen and The Exorcist are the two scariest movies I've seen. (I know they're are some other very scary movies, but these two just freak me the frick out).

Way up there in the pantheon of "suspense" type (versus gore) horror, which I prefer.
Trivia: The sequel (much lesser regarded than the original, despite a stellar cast, one of William Holden's final roles) triggered a nightmare in Iron Maiden's Steve Harris, who was then inspired to write the song, The Number of the Beast (title track of their 1981 album).
The original film was directed by Richard Donner - Jerry Goldsmith (scored all 3 films in the franchise) - won the Oscar for best score and was nominated for best song for Ave Satani.
Remains the best (Hollywood, anyway) film about the damned ole devil, IMHO.

Along with The Amityville Horror, they also have the best musical scores for horror movies. The music adds a lot to the ambiance of those films imo.

Definitely a film aided massively by the awesome score.
The remake wasn't a terrible script but without a powerful score, it was dull trash.
It's like they knew they couldn't compete with the original score so they didn't even try.

One of the few movies that really really scared me as a teen. Believe me, I checked myself for that 666 constantly.

I caught the Omen and Rosemary's Baby on Netflix a couple of years ago watched pretty closely together. Guess I was on kind of a horror movie binge. Anyway, the concepts of the two movies seemed pretty similar to me. While the Omen isn't bad, my impression is that it is kind of a cheaper version of Rosemary's Baby.

I wouldn't call it a cheaper version. It had top of the line actors, script and score.
A continuation of the story, sure. But not cheap in comparison in any way.

The Chants used to keep me up at night when I was a kid.

Exorcist III freaked me out more than the Exorcist. The scene where he goes after the nurse with the shears scared me to death when I was younger.

The Exorcist is the better film (between that and Exorcist III), but I still watch that particular scene with my hand over my face.

Ditto. Didn't help that I saw them when I was like six either.
