The Academy hates sci fi.

Best film of the decade, IMO.

Non-CGI heavy sci fi films never get the benefit over movies like those.

But Children of Men is among the greatest films ever made, and was AT LEAST as good as The Departed.

All I've seen are these two. I thought Flags of our Fathers was a much better movie. Adam Beach should have gotten a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

That's all I've got to add to this thread.

The film itself was too heavy, too risky, and didn't play to oscar-worthy tropes.

Children of Men was really amazing.

I heard Babel was heavy-handed and kinda stupid.

well said.

If it had laser guns and choreographed combat action scenes, it would have won state.

Evidently, I may be in the minority on this board, but I disagree completely with everything in that quote.

Children of Men was a good movie, and it probably deserved a nomination, but it wasn't much better (if at all) than the other nominees. I've seen all of them except Letters from Iwo Jima. I definitely prefer The Departed to CoM, and The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, and Babel are all toss-ups IMO. I've only seen Babel once, but I really enjoyed it (if memory serves). All are good movies.

My mother keeps bugging me to watch the Queen. And I think I would like Babel. I like those movies like that that have big ensemble cast and intertwining stories. Like Grand Canyon, Amores Perros, etc. Not like Valentine's Day.

Babel and The Queen were the weakest of those films. The Queen was only good because Helen Mirren had such a great performance.

what about Babel, though?

Babel fricking sucked a big cock AND it was risky and didn't really hit the "all american" nerve for an oscar

Babel is one of those movies that makes you think it's better than it is via presentation. you FEEL like this is supposed to be some profound statement, and people don't have the balls to be like "this fricking suuuuuuucks."

this happens on the flip side, too. Gigli was not nearly as bad as it was made out to be, yet critics were scared to be "that guy" who defended it. and i don't mean pulling an Armand Williams...i mean legitimately defending it
