Growing up in the 90s both of these were a part of most every kid's October entertainment. But which is the better Halloween movie?

On one hand Hocus Pocus obviously has the production quality and a little star power that comes with being a Disney movie behind it but Ernest has the cheesy campiness that makes it enjoyable for kids with a Monster Squad or Goonies type of feel and helps it become a cult classic for adults, not to mention having some legit scary moment. Both are packed with nostalgia and make for enjoyable rewatches every Fall.

Personally, if I had to pick, strictly for the purposes of watching a Halloween movie a cool Autumn night, I'm gonna go with Ernest. What say you M/TV Board?

And just realized that this sounded like it an one DanMullenDawg or whatever his name was thread but, tis the season for movie debates

Ernest 100%. Hocus Pocus was great once a year. Way too overplayed.

Ernest and it's not even close. I enjoy Hocus Pocus, but it's not nearly as fun of a movie.

I have to go with Hocus Pocus. Mostly because my parents weren't big Ernest fans so I wasn't able to watch his movies until they went to sleep. So familiarity wins out.

Agreed. I mean who the hell wants to watch Hocus Pocus on Saturday night in July while you're tending to a sunburn suffered from the lake on Independence Day? For awhile I've felt that they were trying to make Hocus Pocus to Halloween what A Christmas Story is to Christmas, and I just heard the other day that Freeform is closing out 13 Nights of Halloween with a 24 Hour marathon of it on the 31st. Ehh, it's definitely a change from looking for an obscure holiday to use as an excuse to have a Harry Potter marathon I'll give them that.

Hocus Pocus just because I'm far more familiar with it.

You can't really go wrong though. I'll need to give Ernest a watch soon, haven't seen any of those since college.

Ernest easily. I never saw Hocus Pocus. Sarah Jessica Parker looked good though.

No need to be ashamed, bro. Your among friends here.

But seriously, who would have thought you'd see a PG movie, let alone one starring the lovable Jim Varney, that showed kids being hunted down and basically having the life drawn out of them by a troll? Pretty creepy stuff when you really think about it.

Hocus Pocus because it's the only movie SJP ever looked bangable in.

Hocus Pocus and it's not even a debate.

Ernest is a niche thing, I love it, but there is a lot of people who don't like his brand of comedy. Hocus Pocus is a staple Halloween movie, Ernest I would easily watch, but not search for on Halloween.

I need to rewatch Ernest. I totally forgot about that movie. I’m impressed with how well Hocus Pocus has aged. It’s classic & still sucks me in every time it’s on TV.

It's a damn shame that Ernest Scared Stupid isn't as popular as Hocus Pocus.

Been waiting for ABC family/Freeform to finally get hip to the Hocus Pocus marathon. For years it’s been staring them in the face to be the A Christmas Story for them, as it should be.

Both are classics by the way.
