I don't know the comic's pedigree, but I'm guessing that it entered the market in the 1960's and it's been cared for in the correct manner since then.
Publication date for Action Comics #1 is June 1938. It's way old.

I realize that. The value of back issues didn't become into play until the 60's, so I would guess that it was 20something years old when someone began storing it between sheets of non-acid paper, or storing in cedar, or whatever they had access to prior to acid-free bags and boards.
Though you still had people finding high grade comics with hoarders and such in the 70's and 80's.

I was in a comic shop once when an older lady came in to sell a reprint of AC#1, thinking it was the real thing.
She got mad and accused the owner of trying to cheat her, then left.

Would be dumb to go to a local shop to sell an AC#1 to begin with.

Never considered that. I bet a lot of AC #1s simply got trashed too

It does seem like the Head Quarters would have kept a copy of each and every book stored away somewhere safe.
Would have made sense.

nah they dont even keep plain issues. they toss those things out. they just bind a bunch of issues into a bound book for research purposes. editors will keep trades in their offices.
but no, they arent collectors like the fans

Yeah but..damn..I mean the first book put out, I'd want to keep one framed if only for pride.

DC kept the final production art of each page (which is why they were ahead of most others when it came to reprints). Original art and comics tended to disappear from the comic companies.

Paper drives during WWII did away with a ton of them, and Action #1 included a coloring contest which led to a lot of issues being defaced and cut up.

I know that in the 60's you could take a tour of the National Periodical (DC) offices and they would give each kid a page of original art.
