I wish I could find the whole thing but here's some clips of the whole cast and crew discussing making Heat.

All the heavy hitters were there... Pacino, De Niro, Mann, Kilmer, etc and moderated by Chris Nolan, who self admittedly used Heat as his model for The Dark Knight

Enjoy... LINK

One of the most overrated flicks of all time. The story and dialogue are just incredibly mediocre, especially in contrast to the heavy hitters involved in the production.

Obligatory

Greatest action sequence of all time, or at least certainly arguable.

It's awesome in surround sound.

the wife/step daughter bits just drag it down. yeah it shows what he has to go home to and the stress, but you can fast forward those scenes and nothing changes

No kidding. The contrast between the heavy artillery Kilmer and the gang are using and the cops' pea shooters is truly felt in the sound. When the robbers reload, it almost felt like the movie went silent. Great, great use of sound.

Agreed. I don't think I've seen anything else that can match that sound for the robbery heist scene in Heat. Felt like real life shooting of those guns. Definitely was of the GOAT IMO for crime/action movies.

And the shells hitting the ground all over the place too.

Nolan even points out the sound in one of the videos. He even says he's never heard anything like it.

Mann said all the shootout sound was authentic production sound effects... Nothing artificial.

Apparently the downtown buildings acted as canyons and gave off that incredible gunshot sound.
