She hadn't seen Ant Man, but it was marketed as a sequel to Captain America.

She, and other casual fans who hadn't read comics as kids, also missed interesting parts of the movie (like who this Black Panther guy is, what's so special about the metal, etc) that comic book fans easily picked up on without noticing.

Keep in mind, they just introduced a couple of major new characters in Scarlet Witch and Vision in the prior Avengers. There's the two of them, a now deceased Quicksilver, a new Ant Man who wasn't in the original, War Machine, Bucky, etc.

There's a lot to keep track of and it gets messy. The first Avengers movie was really good because of its ability to juggle as many characters as they did - but there are simply diminishing returns of interest for casual fans. You can't introduce a lot of new characters unless you really have adequate time to make the audience CARE about all of them. Even comic book fans want to see if the actor gets the character before they buy in.
