Joan Rivers wasn't even funny. She looked mentally retarded and spent her career making fun of how other people look and what they wear.

She was a funny comedian when she was younger and also guest hosted The Tonight Show on several different occasions.

I'm mentioning Jean Stapleton just because of how great the chemistry was with Archie and Edith.

She just didn't do much television, but, on a pure talent scale, Madeline Kahn is, perhaps, the finest comedic actress in history.

I think the case is so strong that everyone else, the greats, Lucille Ball, Rosalind Russell, Carol Burnett, etc., are all fighting for second place.

Mel Brooks would be a footnote without Madeline Kahn, and I think he probably knows that.

She was funnier than ever, doing stand up, three weeks before her death.

Joan had her own talk show so by the op's vague guidelines, she qualifies in the tv category which is not really fair to the other women listed in this thread as they never stood a chance.

Joan Rivers in undoubtedly the greatest comedianne of all time.

I would put Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and Madeline Kahn in contention for the greatest female comedic actor of all time.

Joan Rivers is the only one of the names mentioned who was a comedianne or stand-up comic, who dabbled in comedic acting.

Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett would be on the top of my list.

I for one have the utmost respect for Joan Rivers and her body of work.

Mary Tyler Moore would be just outside of a top 5 list for me. She really peaked a long time ago and didn't keep going well into old age like Rivers, White, Ball and Burnett. Although Carol has really pulled a disapperaing act in the last 15 years or so.

Yes. Her night club stand up routine was never equaled. Girl could cuss like a drunk sailor. Nobody dared to heckle her. she also ran with the Rat Pack.

If we can include the Brits, I'd probably have to throw Patricia Routledge in the mix.

Madeline Kahn and Mel Brooks have one of those great synergies. She was never as funny as she was in one of his movies. His movies were never funnier then when he had her in them. The right writer/director and the right actress at the right time.
