Makes for an interesting situation of casting though.

The entire concept of “blonde superhumans” being what the main character transforms himself into AND that pretty much every character is a blonde white person makes casting tricky for Hollywood.

Fans would reject it if they try their diversity hiring.

So, I don’t expect them to make a movie or show out of it.

^ wasn’t a problem for the targaryans. Stick to the script

But the Targaryans can be switched up because the actual race isn’t a factor. The only reference was really hair color/eye color. Race isn’t an important factor. Lineage is.

“Color” is a central theme to the story for Red Rising.

I just don’t think it would work.

For example, the entire “red” population would be essentially black/brown. No one would expect there to be any white or Asian characters.

But you can’t go and have the opposite for the golds.

Are you going to remove the entire alteration of the main character? Why even have that aspect of the story if race/appearance doesn’t matter?

And if you remove that, where is the character’s sacrifice?

Are you going to just dye the main character’s hair?

It just doesn’t work. It would alter the entire central theme of the books.

With modern casting processes, you can’t make a live action version without severely altering the book’s central themes.

Will not watch. Have no desire to watch anything else in the Game of Thrones sphere.

I think fans would have a bigger problem if they tried to make the Reds diverse because they are clearly Irish. The Golds are a diverse caste. Aja, the Ash Lord, Quinn are all black. The Rim Golds are Japanese/Pacific Islanders. They may swap a family like the Velaryons in HoTD and you can easily diversify the supporting cast at The Institute without having to touch the main cast.

One of the rumors for why we don’t already have a show is because the production company that wanted to make the show requested to make Sevro a girl for a love triangle situation and Brown refused.

After reading this, I’m questioning whether you even read any of the books.

The “colors” are specific only to eye, hair, and in the case for golds, the sigils embedded in their skin.

I had more of an Indian ethnicity than Irish.

Although that was just how I pictured them in my head, although the audio book was in a UK accent.

Is that canon, because I did not get that from the books when I read them.

Weren’t the golds judged within their society for how “gold” they were?

Sevro had a “dirty blonde” look.

Did the author come out with those descriptions?

Then I’ll be perfectly fine accepting that I am wrong, but I don’t recall any references to any golds being anything but white.

ETA: I take it back. I just looked at the Wiki. Quinn was black.

Well I’m flat out wrong. I admit I don’t recall that in the book at all.

I need to go read them again.

All of the daughters of the Ash Lord are described as dark skinned, several characters are olive skinned. Darrow and Eo are both described as pale and white when as Reds.

Outside of the books, he has confirmed in interviews about the diverse races of the golds and for the Reds he specifically chose the Irishman Tim Gerrard Reynolds to narrate the audiobook.

Do yourself a favor and do the audiobook version. One of the best narrators I’ve listened to.
