seasons 1-4 are art
i feel like GOT has too many story lines to truly crack that level of greatness. that's why the books are so much better, hard to cover things sufficiently in an hour.

Another reason for the ratings is that it is definitely a "water cooler show".

there wasnt DVR in 2002. these numbers are way skewed compared to the Sopranos numbers.
