It is.

Empire is the superior film, although there are some who place Star Wars in the first position because of it's place as the first installment. I understand that argument and I probably have it closer to Empire than many. There is even a small minority who prefer Jedi, despite Ewoks and other flaws in an otherwise fun film. However, we don't seriously consider those people's opinions.

Thank goodness Lucas didn't succumb to the temptation$ of making additional films in the franchise. That had the potential to be just 1 $hit sandwich after another.

Empire is the better story. Star Wars, to me, was the better overall film. I say that, in part, because George Lucas incorporated so many homages to classic samurai and western films. And it does have the benefit of being the first in the series and can stand alone by itself.

you and the bros can gang up on me all you like. Star Wars is far and away the better movie, and doesn't need the others to exist. By itself, it would make no sense. Second installments are like bridges in music. They're good but can't stand alone without the rest of the story.

"Some"
So yeah, that's checkmate, but keep parroting others contrarian pablum. You know you're in the minority.

This is truth. Take me off the list, brother.

Done.

We should also agree that Indy rightfully stopped at 3 movies, with The Last Crusade being a very nice final chapter.

Yoda, Boba Fett, Darth Vader in a real light saber fight, Lando, Hoth, Cliff Clavin, etc., beg to differ.

Well, yeah. I mean, you can't really top The Last Crusade in terms of subject matter. It's the Holy Grail. What else would they do? Like, soma aliens or something? That would be stupid and painful to watch. Might as well put LaBeef in it just to complete the ruination of the series.

You know what would have been better than what they actually did? Anything.

Like Nic Cage, in a reboot as a Steampunk Indy - that would have been better - that "anything".

You're just about the only person alive that thinks that.

Empire is one of the greatest films ever, just just Sci-Fi films. Star Wars is a close second, but Empire stands alone.

I want to meet the person who thought it would be a good idea to have Indy survive a nuclear detonation by hiding in a refrigerator. Or the monkeys. Or La beef as The Wild One.

Do you think they do this just to piss off the fans for the hell of it or do you think they really believed it was a great movie?

Firefly was good too, but not enough people watched it.

The problem Firefly faced is the same one Family Guy faced in its first run, dumbass execs moving it to different time slots almost every week. It's hard to build a fan base when no one ever knows when the show is coming on (thank God for DVR's!)

If Lucas had done it like he did the prequels, I would tend to think he was too oblivious to realize how big a piece of $hit it was.

However, Spielberg, with Frank Marshall producing, made KOTCS and I have to believe they knew it was terrible, the money was spent and the movie had to be released. Speilberg tends to direct quality products (A.I. notwithstanding), and I suspect he realized this wasn't it.

He knows:

quote:

“George is in charge of breaking the stories. He's done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not, George has broken all the stories." Elaborating on that implied dissent, Spielberg discussed the last time Lucas "broke a story," really shattering it into a million pieces: “I sympathize with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin,” Spielberg says of Crystal Skull, explaining, “George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn't want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in—even if I don't believe in it—I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisioned it." (However, he does add that you shouldn’t blame Lucas for the infamous “nuked the fridge” scene: “That was my silly idea,” Spielberg says, adding that he’s “proud of the way “nuked the fridge” has joined “jumped the shark” in the pop culture lexicon.)

The usual story is lack of promotion, requesting a second pilot, airing the second pilot as the first episode, and placing it where fans couldn't find it.

BTW, I found the original pilot to be boring as hell. The second pilot had a much better chance of bringing in repeat viewers.
