I agree the template is terrible - that's why I enjoy Modern Family so much now - yes, they have the sitcom formulaic pieces, but everybody gives and gets - and despite flirting with cartoons (I mean, it has to be comedic entertainment), there is a "reality" that shines through.

I love Modern Family as well. I don't mind a stereotype joke..
The gay couple on Modern Family has a very sitcom-esq relationship, but it's fresh and funny because it's issues with a gay twist.. and we've seen both be the "weaker" one.
