It's also the way they said it. Don Imus just looks like a mean old a-hole.
Letterman didn't say anything racist. He simply made fun of Sarah Palin (who's kind of seen as a national joke).

Good point. With Imus, a lot of people had little to zero exposure to him before that incident, so it was easy for people to be like "who is this racist a-hole?" Letterman on the other hand is in people's living room's every night and is a fairly beloved American TV icon. FWIW i think what Imus said is worse than Letterman's joke. Other people have made jokes about Palin's daughter in the last few months and haven't gotten this serious of a reaction.
