I’m sure it’s been discussed many times on here before but the search function kinda sucks. Did Ray’s dad recognize him? When Ray says the famous line “hey, dad, want to have a catch” he doesn’t have a look of confusion. Does this mean that he knew the whole time or was it a sudden revelation?

Yes. He absolutely knew who Ray was. He knew it the whole time.

The whole thing was so Ray could make amends with his Dad.

I JUST finished watching this with my 11 yr old. 100% his dad understood it was his son.

So if you rewatch the ending there’s little clues to his Dad recognizing him. The way that he almost introduces him as “Grandfather” to his daughter (and the look he gives). The way he interacts with Ray’s wife.

And when Ray asks, you can almost see his Dad get choked up.

That’s the vibe I got too. It’s one of those movies I could watch 50 times in a lifetime and not tire of it.

Why did rays dad ask if this was heaven, ray says it’s Iowa then ray asks if heaven is real and his dad says it’s the place dreams come true. Seems like dad already knew

Wasn't it Ray's dad that set up the whole field of dreams to start with?

Yes.

They left on bad terms and he doesn't know what to expect from Ray.

When Ray introduces his daughter, he says..."this is my...(pause) this is John."

And Ray's Dad gives him a knowing look like, really?

But he lets the Prodigal son decide atonement on his own instead of forcing the issue... As Ray had previously refused to play catch with his Dad. Ray's Dad knows...Ray has to come to him, as their disagreement in the past was the Dad driving the narrative...and then, says when asked to play catch (I'd like that). Its what he was waiting for...Ray has come home.

Nobody says, "Have a catch."

Still bugs me.

I just watched it last night. It wasn’t Ray’s dad that was the voice in the corn, it was Ray himself that was the voice

Ray asked Shoeless Joe who was the voice, and he responded “it was you Ray”

Which makes sense the corn was saying “ease his pain”

Yeh, that was some writer that never played ball in their life come up with that

I’m surprised Costner, someone that actually played college ball, didn’t try and correct that

I always wished he had said "Hey, dad, you wanna throw?"

I watched this yesterday actually. My three year old son loves this movie. Which is odd to me because it's relatively boring from a three year old's perspective. But he asked me if we could watch it again yesterday and it's been a while since we have, so we did. He's entranced by it for the most part. I love it.

As for the OP, I always go back and forth about it. I kinda lean toward he doesn't realize that Ray is his son at first, because he's actually existing as that person (the young kid playing baseball with "his whole life in front of him" as Ray says). But then gradually he does recognize it and that's why he doesn't flinch when Ray calls him dad and asks to have a catch.

I agree that it makes the most sense if he does recognize that Ray is his son, especially the "Ease his pain" aspect of it. But then why would he introduce himself to Ray if he already knows who he is (and Ray does too)? And even Annie and the daughter know as well because Ray just told them before he walked onto the field.

My 7 year old son loves it, which I found odd as well

However, it’s TORTURE watching it with him He asks at least 1,000 questions through the movie trying to figure shite out

For whatever reason, that part doesn't get me at all. It's when Doc stops short and realizes he can't go back. Watched it again last night.

I remember seeing it around age 6 or 7 and thought it was kinda scary at the beginning. The corn fields and the whispering voice.
