I guess it drives too much revenue to ever abandon. These guys will be doing this shite until they're 60.

Universal is huddling on a spinoff that will focus on the characters originated by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and most recently seen in The Fate of the Furious, sources said. The franchise architects have said they might broaden the universe with spinoffs, and source said this is the one they are pursuing. This is in early stages, but they’ve met on the concept, which sources said will be scripted by Chris Morgan, the chief writer of the series that is hitting new heights with the eighth installment.
The idea is for Johnson’s US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs to form an unlikely alliance with Statham’s Decker Shaw, for a movie that could conceivably be made while they are figuring the next Fast film.

Seems smart. Those movies print money and they're going to want as many streams going to milk this and/or be ready to cut off one branch if, for instance, Vin gets bored with doing it or somebody becomes too much of a headache.
Like it or not, movie theaters are almost strictly for big budget, major spectacle events now. Character driven prestige viewing belongs almost entirely to basic and premium cable TV now.

The Rock has been working on this since fast 5. He's smart.

There was a scene in Fate of the Furious where Shaw/Hobbs discuss each other's past briefly and one of them said "imagine what we could have done together in another life"
Maybe not those exact words, but something to that affect. My thoughts immediately went to a spinoff.
It would get my, and many other people's money.

True. I liked Hans character. I wish they wouldn't have killed him off.
Maybe the can bring him back like they did with letti.

Yeah, every Asian girl I know is crazy for Han and cried when he died - both times. That's why they brought him back and rewound time. He's like Brad Pitt for Asian girls.
And I wouldn't feel so bad about shitty movies that make a ton of money if they would use some of it to make riskier, ambitious movies, but they don't. everything will be made to appeal to the foreign markets now, so there will always be a lot of ridiculous, stupid elements - and robots. Lots of robots.

Well Han is the best character in the FF universe

I don't see how it's any different than a standard Statham/Rock movie. Might actually be better since it will have a bigger budget for more 'splosions.

This^
With only the two main leads instead of 6 or 7, the budget can be used more efficiently.
I would also expect it to be much more in the mold of a True Lies or Mission Impossible type story and less about the cars.
Remember, it seems both of these guys are elite ex military, so that's the focus. This is a start move, I'd go see it.
Plus the Rock despises Vin Diesel so there's that.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham
Hollywood heels and magic that they can do movies together.
The Rock is a 6'5" former football player at the U.
Jason Statham is 5'9".

I thought they axed this idea.
Was supposed to have some sort of after credits scene that Vin was against.
Wouldn't? they need Diesel's permission to use their characters?
He created them for FF, which is his story line

they have managed to take a series with absolutely no fricking plot line to speak of, and not only squeeze 8 movies out of it, create spinoffs. watching a spinoff of FF is like watching a spin off about legos. the hell i need to know more about the rocks character for this isn't Schindler's list this is tits arse and cars. this isn't chess this IS checkers.
