Just got done with it. Would have been better in IMAX obviously, but I liked it. Climax of the movie is almost tough to watch (assuming it really happened - I have no idea)

i gave it a 5.5/10

what i didnt like

-josh brolin's character and the forced side story with his wife. bleh

-we get it is supposed to be set in the 90s. I think they could have done this a little more subtly. Just didnt work for me

-was hard to keep track of who was who. With all the wind it was hard to hear names. On top of that, they all had their face covered.

liked:

-visually it was a nice movie
-the head tour guide, thought he played his role well
- jake gyelenhal, though misplaced, was pretty funny

This is one of the more accurate tellings of the '96 disaster. John Krakauer wrote a book about the events, "Into Thin Air," but he doesn't approve of this most recent movie. (It should be noted, however, that a number of world renowned mountaineers have spoken out against Krakauer's book. Krakauer's book was extremely critical of the Everest expedition.)

Some parts of the movie had to be dramatized because the people in the scenes died and we can only surmise what their last moments were like. And some parts were left out.

They didn't make much of it in the movie but Scott Fischer had completely lost it towards the end. He was noted as having asked for a helicopter to pick him up near the Hillary Step (which at the time was impossible) and also babbling on the radio making zero sense. The movie also played up his lackadaisical style a little bit. Keep in mind he was one of the best climbers in the world at the time.

The Texan was, believe it or not, just as boisterous in real life as in the movie. Since his return home he has continued his larger than life persona only to use it to attack climbers. He's gone so far as to call anyone that climbs Everest "stupid" and says that since someone else was first it is crazy to continue allowing people up there. I've lost respect for the man because of his attitudes post '96.

I'd also recommend that you read about the Austrian team that was on the mountain at the same time. They were only lightly featured in the movie, but played a very controversial roll in the disaster. Namely, they (according to some sources) refused to offer any assistance to the rescue efforts. This is contested on several fronts. They claim they did, but the bigger question is were they in any way responsible to risk their lives to help others. It is one of the most hotly debated aspects of the event and was left out of the movie.

But seeing it in IMAX 3D was very much worth it. It is a story that deserved a big-budget, big-screen, 3-d display.

It was ok, probably the best mountaineering effort to date.

I just read a lot of mountaineering books and have read multiple about 96, so any Hollywood adaptation is probably going to be mediocre for me.

It was absolute crap. Oh, and spoiler, let's all thank JG for his 12 minutes of screen time. At least he got to leave early.

I saw the original Into Thin Air, this movie and others...

That German movie North Face about climbing the Eiger was the best mountaineering movie I've seen.
