Just recently watched this for the first time in forever (1980's). It holds up fairly well and is still a pretty good flick. The one I saw wasn't the new special edition Spielberg re-released in 2002. I still haven't seen the updated version.

I was 4 when this came out and it was the first movie I remember seeing at a theater. It made me love and want to make movies.

Better to see the old version. The new version with the guns taken out is plain lame.

I saw it when it was in the theater and loved it. I have not seen it in a few years, but I always enjoy it when watching again.

Huh? that sucks...Can you explain to me exactly why and what they did...or find a good link explaining this whole gun taking out thing.

I believe you I just want to know about it because I used to love ET and this is the first I have heard about it.

The changes to the film, particularly the escape scene, were criticized as political correctness. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wondered, "Remember those guns the feds carried? Thanks to the miracle of digital, they're now brandishing walkie-talkies.... Is this what two decades have done to free speech?"

They also used some CGI in the 2002 version.

Thanks myth.
I would like to see that SouthPark episode that makes fun of the changes. I wonder what Harrison Ford's scenes were like.

MY daughter saw this when she just turned 4 and I believe those fingers scared her.

She asked us to rent it on NETFLIX last week and she loved it.She is now 5 and 4 months and did not bother her 1 bit.
