No he wasn't, he was doing it for himself, just as he admitted to her in Felina. He started out doing it for his family, but he calculated a hard amount of money he needed to make and surpassed it fairly quickly once he got going. After that, his inner narcissist came out and he only thought of himself, and he began to live out his fantasies of grandeur (i.e. "I'm in the empire business!") in this hyper-version of a midlife crisis. He had many, many attempts to get out and didn't, which totally destroys the whole "he did it for his family" point of view.

She had a newborn baby (the birth of whom was missed by Walt, by the way), what did you expect? She was an everyday American housewife whose life was turned upside down in the course of a few months. In real life, someone like her would be hailed as a hero for standing up to an abusive, loser criminal of husband.
