Does The Mist have the worst ending ever?

I watched this Frank Darabont directed movie last night and was adequately entertained. The acting is very bad and the story is basically about how one day the stupidest people in the entire state of Maine all congregate by chance in one small grocery store; one thing leads to another and next thing you know there's an interdimensional beast infestation.
The first ~1:45 minutes of this movie are alright; the dialogue, acting, and the actions/decisions of characters are laughably terrible, but after about 45 minutes I decided to start viewing it as a comedy and it became more palateable.
Spoilers:
At the end- when Thomas Jane's character kills everyone, including his son, to spare them from facing the monsters- this might have been the most cringeworthy 5 minutes of film I've ever seen. Jane's acting is so, so bad and over the top and the big reveal that the problem is 100% contained pissed me off so much. I really don't think I've ever been so angry at the way a movie "resolved" itself.
Is there an alternate version or something? Damn this movie licked balls.

Line up the old people and kill them both with one shot. save one for yourself.
but yeah... they went from running out of gas to killing themselves awfully quick.

Seriously, like it was just an immediate decision and all things considered, I didn't feel like things were so hopeless that that even seemed like a logical decision. The movie didn't earn that kind of emotional ending and it was garbage.

Stephen King said he loved the ending better than his own book.
I liked the twist

i like the ending too. i took the op as worst ending in regards to the main characters and viewers emotions. Dude is saved 2 min after killing his whole clan. Gotta feel his pain.

I liked the despair too, I think it played well. All they knew was that anyone that was outside for any length of time died from the creatures. They had 0 hope.

no I meant worst ending from a story-telling angle. I mean, yes he is recued 2 minutes after killing his own son and likely the only friends he has left in town, but the fact that they only waited like 2 minutes from the time they ran out of gas to the time they go full-on Jonesboro is just absolutely retarded. I mean, there's probably like thousands of abandoned vehicles in the area, no one wanted to risk siphoning some gas or just trying to steal another car?
All that might have even been excusable if Thomas Jane's crying wasn't so very awful. Probably the worst bit of acting I've ever seen at the end there and I usually like Jane.

Yes its terrible. All movies must have happy endings.

I wanted the creepy, hopeless ambiguity of the novel. I literally lol'd at the ending of the movie; 'whoops!'
It's dumb and plays for pure shock value.

There's hard, unflinchingly brutal conclusions to films that can emotionally affect the audience, then there's the Gilligan's Island shite sandwhich ending of The Mist.

His short stories are amazing, and that's what The Mist was.

IT is one of the greatest books of all time.

I think he has a lot of great ideas and really, great stories, it's just I don't like the way he executes them. I feel like all the sympathetic characters he tries to make come across as total cheesedicks and the the guy can't write casual dialogue for shite.

Who is a good writer in your opinion?

Yeah, no. He can be a bit wordy, but he's one of the very best at creating atmosphere and tension through words. The Stand is a modern classic, while IT and The Shining are both also GOAT horror novels.

I like Tom Wolfe a lot right now.
