I caught this movie on cable the other night, simply because there was nothing else on that I wanted to watch. I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I was entertained. I liked the story and the characters. Not saying it was a great movie, but certainly more than watchable.

I have not read the books and new very little about the story before watching.

kind of the cookie cutter girl power movie floating around these days but yeah, it was watchable and much better than I would have ever thought. I didn't watch it until my buddy watched it drunk and said it wasn't nearly as bad as he expected. Plus the girl is really a cute chick.

Seriously? Here are my thoughts on Divergent.

quote:

The director, actors, writers, producers, set designers, costume people, stunt doubles, people who delivered food to the set, and humanity in general should feel bad about this.

Nothing in the movie made any sense. People are just running places while laughing and yelling and climbing things.

The whole premise made no sense either. The entire premise was dumb.

Oh, and Shailene Woodley is just awful.

Yes, I have only myself to blame for this.
The movie was bad. Everyone involved should feel bad.

Maybe it's the context. I might have felt this way if I would have paid big money to watch this at a theater or even forked over VOD bucks. But as part of my cable package, for a Friday night movie when nothing else watchable was on... not so bad.

The main actor is terrible. The plot is somewhat interesting I guess even though they really don't explain why they are kept in their little civilization and why they need different factions or why "divergents" are bad

The second one looks terrible. Looks like they gave ole girl super powers and shite. The entire trailer looks cgi

There is always something else watchable on.

Always.

I mean, did you not laugh when Woodley started crying after her mom died? It was so bad it was funny.

I also like how someone described the opening scene. When Dauntless runs up, you almost feel like they are going to start snapping their fingers and break into a choreographed song and dance.

When the mom dies

That's when you know she is a terrible actor.

To be fair all that is explained in the second and third books.

She is also a terrible narrator. Her explaining things at the end made me want to shoot myself.

I don't complete blame her though. The writing was abysmal.

ETA: inb4 this is a movie for tweens

I don't wanna be that guy, but unless you're a girl in your early teens, Divergent's pretty awful.

It's like we watched two completely different movies. I disagree with every single one of your points. Enjoyed it. Will watch again and pay non-matinee price to see next one.

It was Deep Impact to Hunger Games' Armageddon. Same topic, but overall a much shittier movie. Hunger Games was better in every regard including cast. And I realize we aren't exactly talking about the pinnacle of modern cinema here.

I picked the book up on one of those Kindle fire sales and read the first one. I had no desire to continue the series.

The Dauntless group was the cast of Rent lacking a few chromosomes. They made me hate the movie instantly. Shaylene was god awful and Miles Teller should stay clear of dreck like this. For a story that's supposed to be about a complex co-op culture it explained nothing about why things are the way they are.

My 11 year old daughter has watched it at least 6 times that should tell you all you need to know

Book-sets up the revolution
Book 2explains why there are different factions, how they came about, etc...
Book 3 explains who or what is really pulling the strings on the "cities"
