He didn't have to hit himself or other people to get laughs. He didn't have to make faces or, get a Pete Rose haircut to look funny.
I think he was born funny. Funny looking anyway.

While Joe Besser never really fit in w/The Stooges, his man-child character was very popular in '40s radio. His catchphrases "Ooohh, you crazy" and "Not so fast!" became household gags, even popping up in the Warners cartoons of the period.

I once heard a Besser appearance on the Jack Benny show where Besser's catchphrases were greeted with rapturous applause.

An appreciation of Shemp begins with understanding that he could’ve copied his brother Curley and did not.

I think it goes deeper than this, even, although it is a solid point.

Moe and Shemp were the first "Stooges", teaming up with Ted Healy around 1922, and Larry joining in 1928. Shemp left the act in 1932, Moe recommended Curley replace him and the rest, as they say, is history.

When I was younger I wasn't a huge fan of Shemp, but I appreciate him much more now.

Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp were all great; the other stooges were awful.

Think a little before you post, my guy.

I stand corrected. A few late night whiskeys will do that to you.

I watch the Stooges almost every weekend. Have every short and movie, so I started watching them in order of release. I just finished 1944.

This made me have a flashback. "you're in a court, not Clancy's poolroom."

Do not bring that evil on this board!!!!

Shemp saved the Stooges after Curly's stroke. He was a worthy replacement. A real mensch. Next thing you'll say is Joe Besser was a funny guy.

Derita was a good friend of Moe's and initially approached by Moe after Shemp died to replace him. Derita did not want to do it because he thought he could never match Curly or Shemp. So the studio got them Besser who didn't fit with the physical comedy of Moe and Larry. Derita did not mind it and saved the boys when they did theater tours in the 50s and early 60s. While no Curly or Shemp, he was a good sport.

Larry and Moe were best friends. The two were more in sync then you would think . Those boys were the best. I get emotional just talking about them. Professionals who worked hard at their craft and overall were good guys.

I assume Shemp was no one's favorite.

Shemp was my favorite. Curly had his episodes that he owned, but to me Shemp was the funniest of the Stooges.
