John Carter was the blueprint for Superman.
In fact basically the whole supes mythos is a John Carter ripoff

John carter is much better than the box office numbers. Disney did poorly marketing the movie.
It deserves its own chapter in a marketing textbook as to what not to do. Really enjoyed the movie and am bummed I'll never get another one

I seem to recall a lot of ads about this show. Am I wrong about that?
They did a big, quick wave of TV commercials, but that was it. And the commercials didn't tell you anything other than " shirtless man, green guys, Disney."
They could have done a much better roll out with print/digital coverage on the origins of the story and the creative legacy of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Instead, it just looked like Disney was making a cheap attempt to capitalize on the fantasy resurgence.

hat killed it in the box was simply the name of the movie and the lack of advertising
"A Princess of Mars" is so right up Disneys alley you wonder htf they could screw it up so badly.

I've been a huge fan of the books since I was in middle school. I was super stoked when they announced the movie.
I'm biased, but I think the movie is much better than it's given credit for. The casting was good, the CGI was good, and the story was decent.
I'd recommend it as a fun film that's worth the redbox fee for certain.

I really liked it a lot. Too bad it didn't do well at the box office cause it would have been nice to see a follow up.

Unless I am mistaken I believe the horrible advertising for John Carter was cited as one of the reasons the then Disney marketing head was encouraged to "seek out new opportunities away from the company". The Disney chairman, Rich Ross, was also let go after trying to blame the film's failure on Pixar and gave only lukewarm at best support to the movie.
It was a big, huge, movie that the marketing people were clueless about and the Disney higher ups didn't have faith in. It is, however, worth noting that it wasn't Andrew Stanton and the creative minds at Pixar who were shown the door after John Carter bombed.

Ross is another example of gays being promoted because they are gay and not because they are competent, ie affirmative rainbow action. It sounds like he was never remotely qualified for the job beyond his penchant to suck dick, which was apparently a redeeming feature among his Disney cohorts.

It's definitely worth the watch. Burroughs us considered to be one of the fathers of science fiction. One of the gripes about the movie was its premise being too vanilla and was a cookie cutter Scifi movie but it's source material at the time blazed a trail in the literature world. The books are great.
It lost most of its money from marketing and that's why it was mothballed.

I've read everything that Burroughs has published and have been a fan since childhood.
I'm sorry that the franchise died so quickly but I'm ecstatic that I have at least one John Carter story on film.
It was visually perfect as cast fairly well.
My only qualms:
TK did a great job as John Carter, but I don't think that he had the star power or screen appeal needed to raise the film above its marketing handicap.
It was a bit silly in places and the Red Martians were less than what they are portrayed as in the books.
But damn I'm glad that I have that movie to watch again and again.
Real Tharks, real thoats, real callots. Awesome.

I enjoyed it. I still don't know what they were thinking with the trailers for this movie. The trailers made the film look horrible. I hope they fired whoever ran that ad campaign.

The first outrage was changing the title from A Princess of Mars to John Carter.
Some jack wagon felt he needed to remove the sci-fi / fantasy elements from the title.
I'll bet anything the Powers That Be thought about going with CARTER!
Morons!
