It was staged. Dan talked about it this morning.
The DVDs being in the trash can were 100% Dave though. Dan did not expect that and he was thrown off a bit, so he said Dave basically did that to ramp up the awkwardness that they were going for, and it worked.

Sandler & DP are good friends & Sandler finds a small role for him in all his flicks. It's a running joke on DP's show that he's an "actor" & the whole "stooge" comment has been part of the running jokes ever since Letterman made that comment.

The only thing awkward about it is that it's not funny. But that's 90% of Letterman's show now, so nothing new.
