Disney faces massive loss on Tomorrowland, after spending $150 million on a confusing marketing campaign
Of course, they did the same fricking think back in 2012 with John Carter (good movie that "bombed" because BO did not recover the massive amount of $$$$ spent on a shitty marketing campaign [caveat: the actual production budget was huge]).
I have knighted for Tomorrowland on this board because it is actually a good and entertaining movie. Sadly, this "bomb" as well as the lingering sting of John Carter (which has had very positive post-release response) could result in Disney (and other studios) being wary of non-established sci-fi films.

Disney has grossed over a billion with the Avengers, it's got a new Pixar movie next week that reviews say it's as good as anything they've ever done, and they've got Star Wars in December. Disney will be fine.

As long as they don't close Haunted Mansion, ICGAF.

Unusual derp by Disney.
In the grand scheme of the Empire of Disney, that's equivalent to the change that gets lost in the washing machine.

In an Avengers year, yes. But Disney's stock took a hit after The Lone Ranger debacle.
Still, this post was not so much about Disney's "health" but the fact that two good films that should have done much better at the box office were hobbled by (and sentenced to failure by) super costly, yet extremely confusing marketing campaigns.

I actually want to see this movie. Does anyone know if the brains behind the marketing for John Carter are the same behind this?
If so, there's your problem.

Someone posted an article not long ago about how the movie companies show losses on purpose. I'm sure Disney owns or is in partnership the marketing firms. So they are essentially paying themselves.
The other movie companies do it so they don't have to pay the actors. If the actors agree to take a percentage of net profit they are screwed. If the get a percentage of gross profit they are rich.

Go see it. You will not be disappointed.

Disney supposedly "cleaned house" after John Carter, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Alec Guiness had that deal with Star Wars.

But the studios still want the film to make bank so they can "pay themselves" as much as possible.
Showing a loss on Avatar vs Jon Carter not doing well in ticket sales are two completely different things.

Disney does a really poor job of marketing these types of movies because they have a shitty marketing department. It seems ridiculous to say it, but if you can't find people to adequately market decent movies unless those movies are well established franchises like Avengers, Star Wars, etc., then you need to fire your marketing department.
The Lone Ranger wasn't a very good movie, but the marketing did nothing to make it look all that good either.
John Carter was decent, not great, but definitely better than its box office performance. The fact that they never once mentioned that the movie was based on the beloved books by Edgar Rice Burroughs was a major mistake, imo. There is instant cache in that. Look at the Narnia movies. They were pretty meh, but they have a name in literature. Ground your movie in that so people know where you're coming from.
This is actually a decent trailer for Tomorrowland, but to me, trying to set up an entire universe in a trailer is tricky and Disney just hasn't quite figured it out yet.

Never mind that the John Carter series influenced Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, and Carl fricking Sagan. Just put out a promotional campaign educating the public on how this is the series that was the starting point for Star Wars and Cameron's Avatar.

I want to see it, so this is good to hear. It looks so unique and different. Just not enough time recently.

I don't know where you are, but at MOL in BR, it was on a 3D auditorium and a 100 seat 2D when my family and I went to see it on 6/5. Considering the avalanche of "bomb" press it is getting, you may want to get to the theater soon.

Salt Lake City now. (And just to gloat the theaters here are awesome.)
But, but, but Jurassic World!
I really do want to see Tomorrowland. Maybe do the double feature.
