Clark made good enough money that he shouldn't have to worry a bout a buying a pool with a bonus check.

He was always terrible with money and cousin Eddie freeloaded off of him every chance he could get.

My guess is that Clark was making easily in the $200,000-$400,000 range.

Just by looking at his house and his neighbors, he is in the upper middle class part of Chicago.

IIRC he offered to write a hotel a check for $1000 and told the guy to give him $300 and keep the rest. (ETA In European Vacation). He also gambled away $22K plus in Vegas Vacation without hesitation. Clearly he wasn’t poor.

Just a poor money manager.

Regardless of how much his Christmas bonus was, it was an idiotic thing for him to do. Pools are not a one time investment, much like a boat. Once you purchase one, that’s where the spending begins.

Apparently it would have been enough to cover the cost of installing a new pool,

It was only the down payment for the pool. He wrote the check but didn't have the funds to cover it.

In vacation, Eddie asked I think $50,000 and gave him the money and acted like it was no big deal.

He needed the bonus to cover the $7500 deposit he put down on it. So, at a minimum it was that.

that has always been my Christmas Vacation problem. Apparently Illinois looked like Colorado in the 80s.

I just googled it, and a lot of the movie actually was filmed in Breckenridge. Here is the link to the website that I read:

Yeah, but I remember after this scene Ellen mentions that they gave them $500 (while complaining about everything costing more on the trip).

It probably took a lot of money to keep Beverly DeAngelo happy.

Yea that’s right, we just don’t see him actually give CE the money. He did get those sweet arse white shoes as a result tho.

While we are at it, why doesn't Clark just climd down from the attic onto the top bunk from the hole he made in Russ's room?

Yeah, that always bothered me. You already messed up the ceiling. Might as well pull it off a little more to get down. Also, what kind of self-centered maniac shuts an attic ladder without making sure someone isn't in there. I would have probably drugged Marie Barrone's martini that night to make sure she slept for the rest of Christmas.

Yep and he obviously had some sort of clout with the company. Hence the scene where he's telling multiple executives to basically frick off.

I'm watching this tonight, and another aspect of the attic scene is bugging me. Clark goes into the attic to hide gifts. Let's ignore the fact that he just woke up, so wherever the gifts were hidden before was doing just fine. The part that bothers me is that the gifts are wrapped. Why the need to hide them? Clark could've been enjoying shopping and lunch with his shitty father in law.

We just watched this, too.

The simple answer is Clark is a moron.

Russ is watching what looks like either a Christmas or Thanksgiving parade on tv as well. How is that possible, or what what he watching? I don't care to look it up. It's more fun to ask TD
