China doesn't like Star Wars

here's one for you Star Wars haters LINK
In other words, unless you're a Star Wars fanboy who just wants to relive nostalgia from the original series, you probably won't like this.

Anyone seen Boonie Bears 3 yet? It might be really good, I don't know.

While Disney did market the movie in China, the article notes that the movie may be considered a "rip off" by the Chinese as they are new to Star Wars and have seen similar movies like it in the past 35 years.
China Film Insider even reports younger audiences found Star Wars: The Force Awakens boring, and the movie has failed to be a hit with the younger generation.
"Perhaps what should be most disconcerting to Disney are reports that younger moviegoers in third- and fourth-tier cities, the demographic fueling China’s booming box office and the target of Disney’s marketing bonanza—the foundation for its future success in the country—were confused by the plot and even heard snoring during screenings," the site reports.
Chinese social networks are also responding negatively to Star Wars: The Force Awakens:
“If a science fiction film lacks imagination then what makes it different from a soap opera? The story was completely in service to fans of the original trilogy and it only relied on razzle-dazzle effects. The most laughable element is that all the force in the galaxy could belong to one family. Creating nostalgia while introducing a new conceptual story doesn’t have to conflict.”

China Box Office: 'Star Wars' Loses Weekend to Chinese Film 'Boonie Bears 3'
quote:
The decline came after Chinese exhibitors steadily reduced screenings to make room for Chinese film Boonie Bears 3, a relatively low-budget local animated feature. Based on a popular CCTV animated series and produced by Fantawild Holdings and LeVision Pictures, Boonie Bears 3 earned $15.08 million on Saturday and Sunday and had grossed a total of $20.07 as of Monday, including preview screenings. It received roughly 10 percent more showings than Force Awakens over the weekend

Should've cast Stephon Marbury as Finn.

Trump is right about China. They gotta be dealt with.

I can understand stand that.
The entire film is a nostalgia flick and a fan homage.
If you aren't familiar with the originals...it's not that great. The characters don't mean much to you and they are probably wondering, who are these old people and why should I care?
It's a little like how America went gaga for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and it was just a run-of-the-mill movie in the Far East.

Yeah, China isn't a good place - there was an article in the WSJ, that Hollywood doesn't really export African-American centered movies because they get rejected overseas - especially in Asia.

Still can't believe that a black lead would cause this...
Most likely they have no connection to a fan-film.

A person of African descent traveling to China should not be surprised if they are repeatedly stared at or even swarmed by crowds of curious Chinese who will ask questions that reflect their ignorance and lack of interaction with Black people.
Racism against Blacks may be the strongest form of prejudice in China. Many people in China look down upon other Chinese of darker skin, and believe the whiter skin has more beauty.
In China, Black people are viewed through stereotypes, and most Chinese assume Blacks are poor, uneducated, violent, play basketball, are barbaric and wild, and even eat each other. The most common Chinese slur used against Black people means “black ghost.”

I knew the Chinese would hate Finn. Its weird how Hollywood wants to have more diverse casts, but also wants to break into the Chinese market which doesn't want diverse casts. I wouldn't expect a black lead character in the next Transformers movie. They do love the Fast and Furious movies though.

it's not just the black lead
the movie was an homage/nostalgia bomb and since the OT was just released there, it likely comes off as shitty pirating
also certain nuance and conflict doesn't translate to china. their culture is very black/white (please excuse the pun) with respect to morality

I understand that they are a big market and all, but why are we relying on a bunch of commies to determine quality?

They don't really influence our perception of quality, but they're going to have a say in how future movies are made.

The average Chinese person wouldn't know a good film if it slapped them in the face. They really don't like movies of moral ambiguity or that have any black stars (save Will Smith and his ilk). Really the average Chinese person just wants to be spoonfed a story. All they care about is the fact that the bad guys are just bad, the good guys win, and that there are tons of explosions with no real stakes.
It really isn't in this movie's favor that the bad guys are a brutal dictatorship who hate democracy and have soldiers trained to uniformly not question brutal orders. I'm sure that rings some bells over there. And then when the black guy is the one to defect, I'm sure that pissed them off.
To be fair they're right in that this was a movie made for pretty much nothing but the fans of the original trilogy, but really the Chinese as a whole haven't seen the original trilogy. I can't remember seeing Star Wars in too many DVD stores I visited. They really haven't had an exposure to the franchise. My thoughts before this film was released was that it would do just ok and that the Chinese would go see it just to see why America loved the franchise. They have no real context to anything and it's not engrained into their culture as it is in ours. So this should have been expected by Disney.
Even if they were to release the OT in theaters over there, there are 3 reasons they won't like it:
1) The effects aren't all that cool anymore and outdated.
2) The bad guys form a brutal dictatorship
3) The Chinese audience would utterly despise The Empire Strike Back, which is the glue that holds the franchise together. It's a film that is aimless and has moral ambiguity, and doesn't help that the bad guys work for a dictator. Not to mention there's a black person in it trying to hook up with a white chick. I'm confident the average Chinese person would hate the movie.

Living over there, entirely true. Had a black friend, and he was treated much, much differently than we were. Happened at least once a week where we were walking down the street and someone would start running in terror. People constantly pulled him aside to take pictures as well. On the positive side we'd lie to bouncers at nightclubs and get in for free by saying our friend played for the NBA. Nightclubs were the only places where you'd get perks as a black man in China. I'd never advise anyone who was black to travel to China.

Well it also had the biggest opening weekend of all time in China.
And while it had a big drop, it was the lowest of all the films (% wise). LINK
I wonder if that Chinese site is conjuring up propaganda to get more support for the Chinese films.
