Can Star Wars TFA break opening weekend record without a summer month debut?

It seems like all of the record breaking openings are strategically placed in the summer months as the peak movie-attending season.

It's already sold 50 million in opening release presales on Thursday night. So I'd say yeah.

It can and it will. Look for the opening weekend to be well north of $200 million in the United States. I have seen some prognosticators predicting a $300 million opening domestic intake.

I feel like it won't break the opening weekend record or the top grossing record simply because of the non summer debut.
However, I do think it'll be top 3 or 4 on opening weekend with a possibility to break record and I would not be shocked if it did.

Time of year doesn't matter. Star Wars nerds will take the week off work and watch every showing every day in IMAX 3D. Plus this movie will be on at least half the screens at many theaters. There isn't much competition out around that time.

I think what this movie has going for it (other than being one of the biggest franchises in movie history) is that it has little competition and should be playing in a ton of theaters. Might even break the record for most screens which would mean it would easily break the record for opening weekend.

The two highest grossing movies by far were released in December. December movies do fantastic. It should have no problem at least beating Titanic.

Titanic and Avatar both opened in December. Neither of them posted record breaking weekends but went on to become the highest grossing movies of all-time.

I don't see non summer being an issue. It's already sold so many tickets, hype levels are unreal, and I don't know many other school districts but it comes out the day before I go on winter break from teaching.
