I think he plays a more realistic insane serial killer, but as far as entertaining, Hopkins wins

Buffalo Bill was creepier, but the Tooth Fairy was an awesome villian because you can sympathize with him

Manhunter is a freaking great movie

To start out you are comparing different stories.

Silence with Manhunter.

Manhunter is my favorite film out of Silence, Manhunter and Red Dragon.

Noonan was creepier than Fiennes from Red Dragon but Buffalo Bill dancing to Goodbye Horses is the creepiest scene of all 3 movies.

Petersen was better as Graham than Norton.

Hopkins was best but I still really liked Brian Cox as Lecktor.

Although dated, the atmosphere and soundtrack from Manhunter kick the crap out of the other 2 films.

I choose not to count Hannibal.

Yes. Both written by Thomas Harris and both featuring Hannibal Lecter. If you actually want to compare the two "tooth fairies" (wasn't my initial intent), I'd say Tom Noonan was far scarier and creepier than Ralph Fiennes (even though Fiennes is a very fine actor).

It's close between Manhunter and Silence for me. I always find myself watching Manhunter when I stumble across it, though. I watched it last night on Showtime and that's why I started the thread. On the other hand, I had just read Silence the year before it came out and thought Demme did a great job directing it.

No doubt Manhunter is a child of the 80's . . . visually and with that cool soundtrack. I think that soundtrack may be the only time I've listened to Shriekback.

Overall, Norton is probably a better actor than Peterson, but Peterson IS Will Graham, imo. Norton even seemed to cop some of his mannerisms from the original.

Also,as you probably know, Mann, like Ridley Scott cut his teeth on commercials. So style and the look has always been important. The million dollar clothes and set designs in Manhunter still seem fresh in spite of being dated (one of the forensic guys uses a pricey letter opener from the Museum of Modern Art to move the toilet paper letter around; Peterson sports a $1500 jacket that he tosses before climbing the tree outside one of the homes).

Manhunter can also be viewed as the genesis of CSI and others.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

He looks fairly different in everything - he's a true method actor and changes face, personality, voice, etc., immerses himself in a role.

I woke up at 4 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep, so I watched Manhunter, based on this thread's recommendation. The sound track was great, and the cast was perfect. It outpaced Red Dragon in every way, EXCEPT for the ending.

SPOILERS

I liked how Red Dragon ended with the fire at the house and them finding the teeth. Only to have Dolarhyde show up in Florida to finish what Lecktor commanded him to do.

Ted Levine's portrayal of Jame Gumb (aka Buffalo Bill) is perhaps one of the most underrated performances in Cinema history. that movie does not have the creep factor or the terror without his performance. he should have been nominated for supporting actor.

Noonan is a pedestrian actor. anyone could have given his performance in Manhunter. Will Peterson was great in Manhunter and I agree overall it was a better movie than Red Dragon...Hannibal was one of the crappiest movies i have ever seen and it pains me to say that given Gary oldman was in it

MORE SPOILERS!

Red Dragon was a lot closer to the book's ending than Manhunter, though even Red Dragon (the movie) wimped out in favor of a completely happy ending whereas the book was more of a Pyrrhic victory for Graham.

Heck the same could be said for Buffalo Bill. It was the direction that made that creepy, not any acting on his part.

Stick anyone in a damn skin suit and the scene is going to be creepy.

Eric Cartman played a great Buffalo Bill.

Was it just me or did it seem like Hopkins' Lector had a good bit more screen-time than Cox's Lector? I actually saw Red Dragon before Manhunter & I remember wanting to see more of Cox as Lector.

Yes. I think even more so than in the book Red Dragon. Got to remember, when Manhunter was made Lector was a small part of the story. Because Hopkins blew up the role, they probably increased his role in Red Dragon.

Can't remember because it has been a while since I saw Red Dragon and read the book.
