I'm getting towards the end of a rewatch and something struck me:

Skyler came up with the gambling story to explain how they had gotten money and then used that money to buy the car wash.

But despite this, she's always going on about how they need to look pretty much flat broke: She didn't want Walt to buy a bottle of champagne to celebrate the purchase. She didn't want Walt, Jr. to keep the car Walt bought him, etc.

Seems like it would have been more believable to say they had a bit more money than they spent on the car wash and thus had some for those types of expenses. Hell, she didn't mind them paying all of Hank's medical bills which I'm pretty sure were more than the car and of course was more than the champagne.

Because excessive spending raises IRS suspicions. You don't want the IRS coming down on you. It's worse than regular law enforcement in most cases.

They're hiding two different things:

Car Wash - taxes and money laundering

Gambling - why they can now pay Hank's expenses as an excuse.

They gambled - and can now afford the Car Wash...for tax reasons.

Cars...just called attention as ostentatious...and I believe were before the gambling ruse was explained to Hank by Marie. She hid that Walt paid for his medical care.

Jesse: I'm a drug dealer?

Saul: "EHHH! Wrong. Million times worse: You're a tax cheat ."
