I am interested in getting into Star Wars novels, but am not sure where to start. It is my understanding that there are a few storylines by different authors and that they don't really follow the same timeline. Any suggestions?

Understand, basically 90% of the novels are no longer canon due to Disney rebooting the universe not created by George.

But any of Timothy Zahns novels are worth reading (Heir to the Empire is the first). Thrawn is such a good character they actually added him back in the canon via Rebels.

I personally enjoyed the XWing series. I played the space combat sims back as a kid, so these were a lot of fun for me.

And if you ever played Shadows of the Empire on N64, the novel was pretty damn good as well

This may be slightly outdated. I think there has been a couple more books since this was made, but it should get you started.

Start with the Aftermath trilogy. Crap writing style with blandy mcbland characters, but it's the most relevant as it explains what happens directly after RotJ. Also, Bloodlines is the only novel so far set in the sequel trilogy (shortly before) era.Lost Stars is by the same author and comes highly recommended. I have also heard good things about the Asoka novel.

Catalyst is a prequel to Rogue One. It fleshes out Galen and Lyra Erso, but it's pretty uneventful.

I have the Battlefront novel, but I haven't finished it. It seemed alright though even if it really doesn't tie into any of the films at all.

The good/bad thing about this new EU is it seems like it supplements the films rather than acting as a continuation of an on-going story. Everything except for the Aftermath novels can be read in any order.

Season 3 of Star Wars: Rebels takes place a year after season 2 and stretches for almost 2 years.

Rumors abound that Season 4 will include the Battle of Scarif from the perspective of the Ghost.

I thought Season 3 was going to be the final season? At least it sounds like it's the last since it hasn't been renewed for a 4th season yet.

That said, I had never watched the cartoons Clone Wars or Rebels until the past few months. I watched Episode III before starting Rebels, and it's amazing how bad the live action movie was compared to the cartoons. I'm almost caught up on Season 3, and I wish it would get another season, but everything I've seen makes it sound unlikely.

I love how the new books actually explain how fricked up the empire is. Haven't read aftermath and don't plan to. Have read catalyst, a new dawn, Tarkin, lords of the south, and dark disciple and I've enjoyed them all. Tarkin and lords of the sith have plot lines very very similar to Rouge One. If you watched Clone Wars, Lords of the Sith and Dark Disciple follow several important characters from the show

Jedi Academy series.

The Courtship of Princess Leia

The Rogue Squadron series

I even liked the Bounty Hunter series that took individual bounty hunters like Boba Fett and IG88 and told their story.

What I am trying to say is the new EU novels kind of suck right now. They're almost all focused on obscure characters and don't really have a whole lot going on.

There are exceptions. Bloodlines, Asoka, Lost Stars, and Dark Disciple are pretty good.

I started with one of the newer canon novels Lost Stars. It spans the periods just before New Hope and leads right up to before The Force Awakens. Great characters and gives a different insight into the Empire. Great read.

The Thrawn trilogy is definitely the best Star Wars books by far.

From what little I've read of it, it makes far more sense as a follow up story to RoTJ than the canon version. JJ trying desperately to return to Rebels vs Empire in TFA really screwed up the lore I think.
