Picked this book up the other day and I'm about 100 pages in.

Holy crap. I can't think of another writer who can use so many pages and so much description to say so very little.

Maybe GRRM?

Is this whole book a trek through molasses?

I really want to enjoy it. The overall story is fascinating, but the read is just brutal.

King's best novel imo. Stick with it and you'll be hooked soon enough.

Not that I'm comparing authors as I've never read IT, but you should give James Clavell's Asian Saga a go. Especially the first one, Shogun. The dude would describe every last detail of a meal the characters were about to eat.
(great book though)

Sounds like GRRM.

I'm just losing focus when King uses two pages/3-4 paragraphs to basically say, "the house is at the end of the street".

Descriptive flow is essential, but it just appears overly congested at times.

I need to just fight my way through it. I'm excited for the story and I'm just complaining about the prologue basically.

It's my favorite book ever written. I've read it cover to cover at least 6 times in my life.

But I'm a huge King fan boy, so....

This is the first King novel I've read.

My favorites:

Michael Crichton
Neil Gaiman
Eve Forward (only one book)
Heinlein
David Weber

You can tell GRRM is fat because he can spend 5 pages describing every dish of a feast

It's great. I read it for the first time this year. It maybe the creepiest book in terms of understanding the palpable fear the characters' experience.

But, yes, King will leave no stone unturned.

Gaiman is my absolute favorite writer and Heinlein is up there, so we have similar tastes.

I recently read The Shining - my first King novel - and I had the same issues you're describing. I finished it, and it was good, but god DAMN nothing of importance seemed to happen until page 500 something. He will drag the exposition on...and on...

It was good, but I definitely had to power through some parts.

It's more than I can say for any of the 6 or 7 times I've tried to read GoT. I can't get through GRRM's thicket of description.

This first part of the book he is really just setting up the players. After that it starts to read like an adventure novel. At least that's how it is to me so far. I'm also in the middle of reading IT.

King now is real anti-adjectives and against overemphasizing scenery, think he developed a ton after IT.

I loved that book. It is a very quick read. I actually purchased a signed collectors edition of it.

American Gods
Anansi Boys
Neverwhere
Good Omens

I like a lot of his short story books.

Fragile Things
Trigger Warning

IT was written when King was at his peak, drinking and snorting coke like he was afraid we were running out. I am a huge fan of SK. And even though I recognize that he could get a bit wordy back in the 80s, I still love every sentence.

I've read this book three times, first time as a ten year old, once in my teens and again in my twenties. I LOVED it. The memories I had of that book would make the hair stand up on the back of my neck and make me check the toilet before sitting down.

Fast forward to two weeks ago. I'm now in my thirties and with a a houseful of crumb snatchers I don't have time to read. But after watching the trailer for the upcoming movie it made me want to read it again. I'm on the road slot, so I got the audible book.

OMG...it is absolutely PAINFUL trying to listen to this story. I just keep telling Stephen "COME ON MAN GET TO THE POINT!!".

I don't understand. I loved this book. Maybe it's just trying to listen to it in the road, but I'm having a really hard time getting through it.

Like...who cares about Stan's wife!? Does it matter how she was raised, or what it was like being a Jew? Honestly I don't think it's relevant to the story at all. During that chapter I wanted to through my phone out the window (audible book via stored on phone).
