Rented a movie out of a redbox that is a blueray and now it will not play via PS3. When I select the movie off the options I just get a black screen.
Anyone have any ideas?

Bad disc. Try a different movie.

I was hoping this wasn't the case, we rented 1 movie as a Blue-Ray and other as a normal DVD.

check another blu ray disk and see if it plays. If it does, its the redbox disk. If its not, you might have blu ray laser issues.

Can't help you personally, but my advice would be to call Playstation's technical support. I've had nothing but good experiences with them in the past.

As others have said try another blu ray. Also try a dual layered game. (big arse ones like Uncharted 2/3 or MGS4). If they won't load or freeze up while playing your laser could be jacked or some gears in the BD drive have failed. It'll cost about $50 to fix it yourself, $80-$100 to get somebody to do it for you, and near $200 if you send it to Sony. I wouldn't send it to Sony b/c odds are they will give you a different machine and you'll lose all your save data.

If you are in the DFW area I know a guy that will fix it for $80 and he'll give you a 3 month warranty.
