You're seeing more and more TV shows featuring and honing in on the frailty of the human condition and this is another one. None of the characters are especially likeable. Even John, the narrator of the story, is weak and a liar.

That is one serious alcohol drinking family. Not too many scenes where a Rayburn isn't downing the contents of a glass or bottle.
