So if this is the spoiler thread:

Basic plot points to follow.

African Nation has hidden civilization that's highly advanced but fronts as a third world nation to protect itself. It has been this way for many, many years thanks to a special metal and "herb" which created the first Black Panther.

One side wants to remain this way (good guys); another side wants to supply oppressed black people in other nations with the technology weaponized so they can defeat their oppressors. They try to do this covertly using arms dealers.

Subplot has a bunch of odd family ties with some backstabbing involved and a connection to Oakland of all places.

Bad people are about to win, but superhero magic takes place and Black Panther (the good one) wins. But he decides to show the world his real country with an outreach center in Oakland.

In the end, it's a comic book movie. It's not real. The undertones and message appeal to a certain group. And it doesn't really try to hide that. All I'm looking for is a good movie, with good acting, and a plot that makes sense on screen even if it isn't trying to appeal specifically to me.

I don’t get the negativity. It’s hard to see how people wouldn’t enjoy this movie.

Frankly, the first act was way way too long. They spent too much time establishing things that didn't need to be established.

It picked up after it fell into the Marvel action formula but by then they had lost me on whether or not I actually cared about the characters.

The segway between second and third act was much too fast, I thought it needed a good 30 minute window to show a rising internal tension with Wakandas supporting/rejecting the new ruler.

This. The original Black Panther's best friend is like "well, bye" in like 5 minutes bc this new hardass shows up, seemed way too rushed.

It just wasn't realistic that these Wakandans would start killing each other so quickly, presumably people they're friends and family with. If they showed strife in the city of tradition vs. moral conflict it would have made more sense.

TLJ was silly. Black Panther is significantly better.

I really don’t doubt this even if I have no desire to see Black Panther. Marvel tends to make at least coherent stories that have some oversight of following basic plot structure or common sense. Granted that oversight can sometimes ruin things like say Ultron and scare off Edgar Wright, but Kevin Fiege tends to know what he’s doing. I’ll wait like 3 weeks before seeing it.

There have been great MCU flicks and there have been some meh ones and some in between.

Despite the meh ones, they all had one thing in common for me: they were fun. Last night, I was bored for the most part. It wasn’t a bad movie, it was just slow and uninteresting until mid way through the second act.

How was I tricked? In the RT thread I was guarded of the movie and the reviews after TLJ. Don’t be an uppity douche.

Finding some type of cultural significance in a comic book movie set in a fictional place is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.

It really has nothing to do with equality or progress. It's just another platform for preaching anti-western drivel.

Decent superhero movie all around but there wasn't really anything special about it. It isn't as political as folks are making it out to be but there are a few lines that are a bit on the nose.

The action was super meh. The casino fight and Chase were fun but the climax was so fricking uninspiring. The main fight between the Panthers was completely uninteresting. Honestly, the scenes talking about the inner politics of Wakanda were more interesting than any of the action scenes.

The acting is on par with all the other Marvel movies.Solid but nothing much more. Not as many jokes as other marvel movies but most of em landed. The WHAT ARE THOSE was pretty cringy tho

After reading reviews I expected killmonger to be on the level of The Joker as a villain but he was just kinda eh. I've already seen a better version of his character in another movie With Andy Serkis. Koba from Rise of the planet of the apes

Overall it was a solid marvel that I'll probably forget about by tomorrow. I'd put it around Ant Man, Iron man 2 tier

Solidly in the upper tier of Marvel films, probably right around Cap 1, but below GotG, WS, Ragnarok, IM and Avengers.

The acting was on point, although some of he emotional scenes didn't hit the spot. The action sequences had good bits and were well edited. Overall, though, I agree they spent too much time in act 1 and sped through the end of 2 and act 3 far too quickly. They should have reversed that.

The thing that held the movie up well was Boseman's Panther, who is quite good and right up there with Cap and Stark, and Killmonger. Very good villain comparatively. I don't think they were THAT heavy handed all around, honestly.

Fun romp, hit all he right spots for what they needed, and Wakanda was well realized.

Just got home from bringing my son. Solid Meh. Trailers sold me on caving in to son’s begging to go first weekend. I expected much better but got a below average MCU flick. It contradicted itself throughout. Easily forgettable and definitely in bottom tier of MCU films.

I have not read back through the tread yet so sorry if already discussed but if Wakanda was this super advanced society w/ unrivaled tech and OP vibranium weapons on Earth; why didn’t they help during Avengers and Ultron?

This was covered in the movie itself. Wakandans mind their own business and tend to their own affairs. This changed during the summit in the mid-credits scene.

It was a central theme of the movie, so I’m surprised that you missed it. They didn’t explicitly mention Ultron or anything else, but their lack of involvement made complete sense.

Alright people, I just got out. I enjoyed it, but I agree that it is a mid-tier MCU movie.

One thing I absolutely HATED was Daniel Kaluuya turning bad. It was completely unbelievable and contrived. On another note, I didn’t think Michael B. Jordan was that great.

But nonetheless, if you enjoy the MCU, then it’s not a waste of time. Solid B-
