The 2 year stretch for movies thread (of which I'd be hard pressed to disagree) got me thinking about the single best year for movies.
I'd have to go with 2006 as GOAT
The Departed
Children of Men
Casino Royale
Blood Diamond
Last King of Scotland
Thank you for Smoking
V for Vendetta
The Prestige
Borat
United 93
Apocolypto
Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima
Idiocracy
Honorable mention
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen
Pans Labyrinth
Devil Wear Prada

1994 in a landslide for me

1994 might be slightly better, but 1996 is pretty f'n close. The mid-90s was such a strong period for film as the outsiders stormed the citadel (and to be fair, the Hollywood establishment made a pretty strong stand, too)

quote:Ok what ever you think. But i also agree 1994 was great. I just see half of the movies on your list are mediocre. They had plenty of marketing behind a lot of them so people remember them, but they just werent that good to be compared to some of the greatest movies.
That's a very good list. I still give 2006 the nod
Particularly talking about:
Casino Royale
Blood Diamond
Thank you for Smoking
V for Vendetta
The Prestige
United 93
Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen
Pans Labyrinth
Devil Wear Prada
All were decent and memorable but not great.

I thought 1939 was widely considered the best single year for films in history.
Gone With the Wind
The Wizard of Oz
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Of Mice and Men
Stagecoach
Wuthering Heights
The Little Princess
The Three Musketeers

1939 has been the default answer, as it is the studio system at its absolute apex. I think it fails a bit when compared to modern cinema due to the twin rise of indie and foreign films. In 1939, Hollywood did all of the heavy lifting.
1999 also gets a lot of play as a "year that changed movies," but honestly, it seems the innovations of 1999 were more of a last gasp of a creatively rich period rather than a fountainhead of great films to come. 1999 has actually gone down in my eyes in recent years as no one really built off of it. At the time, it felt like they were remaking the industry. I think that remaking happened, largely, in 1994. (1977 is a great call, too)
