Field of Dreams and The Natural are the only two acceptable answers for Best Baseball Movie.

Stud Cantrell was the man. "frick 'em if they can't take a joke." I loved that movie growing up.

Naw Breesus. The movie is much better. The story is better with Roy's redemption.

And the correct answer to the OPs question is The Sandlot. It is the essence of baseball in its purest form.

Battered Bastards of Baseball. Technically a documentary, but it's an awesome look at baseball.

Adult baseball movies?

Major League and Bull Durham are 1a and 1b.

Then Field of Dreams.

Then the Sandlot, the Natural and a League of Their Own.

Sandlot transcends age.

Charlie Sheen's pitching looked authentic and added a lot to Major League's appeal. Tim Robbins, OTOH, looked ridiculous in Bull Durham.

Field of Dreams tried to pass the ghost of Joe Jackson off as a right-handed hitter.

The Natural is my favorite. Love The Sandlot, too.

It has to be Field of Dreams. It's almost impossible not to shed a tear when Ray finally gets to have that one last catch with his father.

Honestly I'd consider Buying Durham a relationship movie much moreso than a baseball movie
If Bull Durham isn't a baseball movie, then The Sandlot most certainly isn't.

I think For Love of the Game gets lost in this conversation too much.

"Clear the mechanism".

But my list from a baseball purist standpoint:

1. Sandlot
2. Major League
3. The Natural
4. Field of Dreams
5. For Love of the Game

ETA:

Bull Durham is not really a baseball movie to me for some reason. Robbins is a goofball as an athlete and it was about the slutty chicks in the stands more than anything.

ETA2:

shite, I left out A League of their Own. Pretty pure baseball movie too. Not sure where it fits, but its in there. I will continue to leave it off just in case I can offend a feminist reading the Movie/TV board.

Sandlot is "Baseball Americana" in its purest form, or whatever you call it. It shows neighborhood boys falling in love with the game and talking about its lore (Ruth baseball). It might not show a ton of actual baseball being played, but its baseball to the bone.
