I always thought he was solid enough to be a lead actor. He's shown a little bit of range on Modern Family, as well as some great comic sensibilities - but he's kind of a tweener, not exactly lead, not exactly support - a hybrid.

I think he kind of missed the boat - got stuck on Law and Order too long (IMHO). Although television actors are no longer looked down upon, he never really "popped" in any product where he had to carry the full load or most of it. He also made some key mistakes (The Next Best Thing, Catwoman), and that didn't help him at all.
