From what I understand the executives didn't like the pilot, to philosophical, and they had to retool the series for more action bang bang. So I think that is why the early episodes are that way.

True. And Star Trek was conventional in that way - episodic, because folks didn't binge watch and syndication was really a tertiary concern. The suits really didn't think a show had much value after its initial airing and, perhaps a single off-season re-run cycle. Yes, they had already been burned by I Love Lucy, but Star Trek is one of the shows that challenged all that - becoming more valuable in syndication in the 1970s than it ever was in the 1960s while still being produced.
In yet another way Star Trek paved the way for multi-season threaded shows - notably DS9 within it's own franchise and Babylon 5 - and it did it, effectively in the pre-video or embryonic video era.
