Recently finished the series in 4 weekends of bingeing. Complex, extremly interesting characters. No good guys and bad guys here. The characters CONSTANTLY develop and devolve, go through moods, are unpredictable. I found myself numerous times very impressed with the strong sense of realism in the character writing, their depth, and their dialog itself. On point. Great great writing and perfectly cast and perfectly acted. New facet of characters' psyches or new facts about their past are revealed quite often. The debate over who they are and who they will be is enough on its own to keep you engaged.

But it all serves a purpose too. The mystery in the show isn't just there for mystery's sake. It comes into play and advances the plot. The plot that revolves around a bunch of murder, rape, abuse, incest, drug dealing, organized crime, and more. It moves along at a very steady clip. "Holy frick!" moments all the time. Bates Motel could squeeze 2 seasons worth of Walking Dead plot advancement into one episode. The show is only 5 seasons of 10 episodes each. Wasn't cancelled or stretched too thin, they told the exact story they wanted to tell. Zero filler episodes. Every episode tells its own cogent story and advances the main story. Loose ends were resolved in natural time, not left dangling nor hastily patched together in the final season.

Treats the source material appropriately. It is not just a spinoff drama set against a Psycho backdrop. It tells the same story in a different way. What it does is expound on the most intriguing themes and backstories from Psycho while still advancing the main story of the original, with details changed.

I recommend this one. Not just a very good show, but a very impressive show. One of the most well made shows I've seen

I was with you until this line. The main players are good, but that dumb blonde that Norman loves is absolutely horrible.

Some other shows that impress me along similar lines:

The Wire
Arrested Development
Six Feet Under
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret
Curb Your Enthusiasm

Most of those are comedies. Outside the Wire, there aren't many action-dramas that are so tightly executed keeping up the pace and a clear vision. Unfortunately he typical m.o. in American tv is to try and make the show last forever. Even the Sopranos languished around at times. Bates is great for a lot of reasons but in part because it wasn't approached that way

I don't like horror, but a friend told me to try it out. Ended up loving it. More of a mystery with suspense sprinkled in. Acting is incredible. Agree with genro's entire second paragraph. My like/dislike emotions have swung to both ends of the spectrum on almost every character.

I think I would move to the other side of the hallway if I walked past the guy that plays Norman. Dude plays the role of a psychopath a little too well.

Couldn't watch it, kid that played Norman Bates has an awful habit of changing accents mid lines and he drove me nuts. Couldn't watch him.

He's talking about Bradley. And it's pretty ridiculous to say you can't say the show is outstandingly acted due to one minor actress that was only in 14 episodes out of 50.

I really enjoyed the show. I haven't seen the last season yet. Gotta catch it on Netflix or Amazon Prime

It definitely had some good moments, and Farmiga can act her arse off, but Freddie Highmore is terrible. Like you said every time he raises his voice his accent comes out and just his acting overall is annoying as hell.

First season was pretty damn good - mostly because of Farmiga who is still sneaky super hot.

Dude said perfectly acted. When Bradley is on screen, it feels like I'm watching the SNL washed up porn stars sketch. Just an airhead with no acting skills. The acting in the show is great overall. But perfect is a strong word, especially since her role in the show distracted me from the realism.
