I read that they actually had a female actor in mind to play that character; but when they couldn't get her, they turned to Anderson.
So it's not meant to be a joke character.

I watched the first episode and it didn't really grab me. Does it continue to just be depressing comedy?

They're even more depressing and not as straightforwardly funny.

Definitely best new sitcom for sure. It's humor is very subtle and that may turn off fans of Zach's previous work whcih is much more slapstick.
And Louie is outstanding on there.

I prefer funny comedies. I watched the first episode and smiled a few times; laughed once at the very end.
I loved seasons 1 and 2 of Louie, but most of seasons 3 and 4 were a struggle (I cannot fricking stand Pamela).
I like offbeat humor, but these shows are something else. Like the visual version of 'quiet is the new loud.'

It's good but it's not even the best show on FX.
