This is incredible.

LINK

I for one never thought this would. I mean it's a good movie, but $1 Billion in this amount of time...wow. Maybe $2 billion isn't so far fetched for this film.

When a movie is released in both 3-D and normal film, that makes it lot easier to make this sort of money considering it's almost 15 bucks a ticket for 3-D. Some people also will go out and see it in both 3-D and normal film. It is even going to be available in IMAX. Not to knock on Mr. Cameron but with this variety of the movie present, making money is a lot easier. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pull in $2-2.5 Billion when all is said and done.

Avatar will not reach Gone with the Wind and Star Wars' domestic haul.

It's the international market that matters. I agree with your statement though about domestic gross, however when GWTW and SW were in theaters, there were not nearly the amount of movies in theatres to choose from nor the variety of entertainment options for people to choose from. Pirating wasn't a huge market yet and people weren't watching these films online illegally. Just consider that when you make those claims that GWTW and Star Wars made sooo much money. They are a product of the times, much like Avatar.

Also when GWTW was in theaters movie tickets were like 20 cents. The amount of people that saw GWTW in theaters is absolutely incredible.

but people buy less 3D tickets to compensate

quote:

1 Avatar Fox $352,114,898
2 Up BV $293,004,164
3 Monsters Vs. Aliens P/DW $198,351,526
4 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Fox $196,573,705
5 A Christmas Carol (2009) BV $137,443,917

that's the top 5 domestic 3D movies. None of them have come close do doing anything noteworthy as far as box office receipts go, except Avatar.

I suspect that the gap between #1 and #2 will make your argument even more ridiculous in the coming weeks
