AT&T’s purchase of HBO could lead to 20-minute Game of Thrones episodes

quote:

As AT&T prepares to purchase Time Warner Inc., AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has an idea for HBO's Game of Thrones: cut the hour-long episodes down to 20 minutes for mobile devices. AT&T's $85.4 billion purchase of Time Warner would give the telco HBO and other lucrative programming properties. Stephenson discussed his thoughts yesterday at the annual JP Morgan Technology, Media, and Telecom conference in Boston.

Lol, you're aware that all these episodes are filmed already, right? He's talking about for on the go. He's talking about cell phones, which he's right, an hour long episode on your phone would murder your battery among other issues. No one is going to butcher an hour long show into 20 minutes. Especially not Game of Thrones, HBO would lynch his arse.

Umm, frick you AT&T. That's not going to slide. That's not enough to get through the biggest plot of any episode.

There's no reason to give AT&T the benefit of the doubt here, and who watches full episodes on their phones anyway?

There's no way in hell any filmmaker wants you to watch their episodes primarily on a cell phone, since it ruins just about everything they're going for. Maybe the Big Bang Theory, but not something on the level of say Game of Thrones when they want your focus and for you to appreciate their production value. If anything it's more insulting to the creators and the people behind the camera on the show who work hard, but now some dickhead is coming in demanding them to make it mobile friendly.

It didn't sound like he was talking about doing that for this season.

Either way, I don't think this would happen. Not because he wouldn't love to do it that way, but because D&D and HBO would laugh in his face if he suggested it.

Edit: the article does say uniquely for mobile screens. But that would still mess up the flow of episodes to create mini endings every 20 minutes.

I have little doubt they would love to do this. Hell, they would probably use a change in platform as an excuse to throw some extra ads as well.

From the old Bell lines all the way through their current day iteration in cable and satellite providers there is not a bigger example of frick you to the consumer in corporate history.
