That line: "The problem is they don't come here and only deal with one leader" proceeded by chaos from other countries not being as understanding as the Americans.

Seemed pretty clearly to be promoting 1 leader (and how easy it would be).

I might be reaching but did anyone else feel this way?

I thought it was saying we should work together instead of just going to war. Not necessarily pro one world government but pro co operation.

I think people tend to read too much into movie messages. Sometimes they're just basic homilies. Some people get furious about pro-environmental messages, for instance, and don't really consider that the message might be a relatively innocuous "Try not to shite where you eat" sort of moral. The problem is, Hollywood is run by committee. We give them way too much credit for well thought out propaganda. Usually it's just sentiment, not manipulation.

It basically was about the importance of open communication.

Don't read too much into it.

3 very civil and fair replies.

I clearly don't spend enough time on this particular board.

The movie has an old theme...

Government incompetence...solved by a thinking outside the box civilian.

It's been done before. It's not don't trust one world government...it's basically don't trust government. All sides frick up.

And like I said...Hollywood has done this many times. It's part of the average citizen can be smarter than everyone else and save the day from bureaucracy. It's sci-fi American dream. It's why she gets so much latitude in the movie...despite that not really happening in real life.

I mean if this was a real military environment...she wouldn't even come close to going rogue to save the day.

The movie is actually pro-American...that American exceptionalism and individualism.

People are flawed, we make mistakes, every one of us, even experts. That's why I don't trust any politician until they actually prove themselves with action instead of words.

It was obvious that the theme was cooperation. We are all related in a way and we share this planet. Our internal fighting would get pushed aside if aliens were to visit.

Reagan had a famous speech about a similar subject. His "dream" was the world uniting against a common enemy or challenge.

It's usually pretty calm around here. There are a few hot button topics, but those are hot button everywhere. And there are a few movies where people will eat your young if you openly dislike them, so lock your childre safely away before you start dissing certain movies. But, on the whole, this is a board where people who enjoy their movies and TV shows to find at least a couple other people they can discuss them with.

I actually just watched this. The main theme I took from it was to enjoy the moments we have for what they are and not necessarily what will come later as a result of the moment, whether good or bad. That was the whole point behind her choosing to have her daughter even though she knew it would lead to heartbreak (death of the child at a young age and breaking her marriage). She still wanted the good moments that led up to the tragedy. There something oddly beautiful about that.

There is the nations working together, but i really don't think that's not some big globalization propaganda. I think it's just merely trying to say that people in general, whether it be nations or neighbors, can solve problems better if we communicate.

Ursula LeGuin - The Lathe of Heaven

The protagonist's dreams change reality. He is seeing a psychiatrist who realizes this and tells him to dream of a world where man no longer fights man and all nations cooperate. When he wakes up the aliens have invaded.

Pretty good book.
