Archer: Vice

So I am late to the party when it comes to Archer but have been going through the seasons the past couple of months and just finished Archer: Vice
I was disappointed in this season compared to the seasons before it. I prefered the piece meal non linear format that the earlier seasons used. I understand they tried to shake things up with ISIS being taken over by the feds but it seemed like this season was dragged in a dozen different directions and nothing really stuck
Not saying I didn't like it, but it didn't captivate me like the seasons before it did.
Also the Pam Cocaine bit was worn out after the first 2 episodes but it kept going and going. I got tired of that and her character quickly. They should have fleshed out Charlene's storyline more instead but they didn't really do anything with it
The best episode of the season was the Kenny Loggins episode, that was classic Archer

It was a very weak season for them, but I'll give them kudos for stepping out of their comfort zone.

I totally agree with this. There was just something really off about the whole season. Season 5 hasn't seemed to have those issues nearly as much.

It's polarizing like Season 2 of The Wire is polarizing - I'm more upset about the teaser/hallucination stuff they ultimately didn't show (e.g. Charlene), than about anything they did make that season. It was fine. It was classic Archer with a twist. But, I understand and respect your points about the departure.

Yeah, they went back to their tried and true formula. I listened to one of the creators on the Nerdist Writer's Panel and he basically said they really wanted to try something else, to see if they could take the show in a new direction, and that upon reflection after the season ended, decided to go back to the original format since, at it's core, the show is about the relationships of the characters and not really what they do, but it had to be within a given context rather than something like Vice.

Exactly... for example the episode where Archer/Lana go to the Louisiana Pipeline to defend it from the eco-terrorist, what made that episode was the banter and conversation between Archer and Lana, not their mission
