EXCLUSIVE: Antoine Fuqua, whose upcoming Western The Magnificent Seven will serve as the Gala Opening Night Film of the Toronto Film Festival next month, is in talks with Universal to direct a re-imagining of another screen classic. He’s negotiating to direct Scarface, the third iteration of the crime classics that Universal made in 1932 with director Howard Hawks and Paul Muni, and again in 1983 with director Brian DePalma and Al Pacino.

The new one borrows the immigrant rags to riches story, but presents it in contemporary Los Angeles. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft, and Paul Attanasio and David Ayer wrote previous versions. The film is a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production. The film will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 Scarface film, will also produce.

Scarface is incredibly overrated but fun to watch, and Fuqua has the ability to produce great work.

I wouldn't have a problem with this at all.

Thousands of narcos and teenage thug wananbes think it was the greatest and most inspirational movie ever made. I hope they don't go out and protest the movie with their machetes and glocks.

I don't know if overrated is the correct word, but it is impossible to replicate Al Pacino in that movie. Tony Montana is just built for Al Pacino to be Al Pacino.

This is an clear example of Hollywood either being lazy or stupid.

Just make a movie about a drug Lord.

Why do they have to take the name Scarface and Tony Montana?

Make a drug kingpin movie where the guy starts as a little pawn and rises through the ranks. Taking the name Scarface is only going to put critics and people like me in a position to shite all over the movie and avoid seeing it.

Yes.

The remake of Scarface was based off the original, but it wasnt the same. They changed a bunch of things, including the main character's name.

This movie will probably end up as a cheap ripoff rather than a remake.

I think that's where we get upset.

Remakes used to be the original reimagined with new parts and characters. Now it's just Hollywood lazily trotting out nonsense. There's a difference.

It's definitely entertaining. Pacino's Spanish accent is horribly bad though.

A remake with a female lead has been done enough, time for a transgender lead.

I would hope so because he was trying to portray a Cuvan accent.
