Berserk.

Really, just Berserk.

On Netflix:

One Punch Man
: Has action, violence and comedy. It's relatively short at 12 episodes, so you don't have to invest too much time into it. Very positive reviews.

Attack on Titan: Dark with action and violence. Slightly longer at 25 episodes, but you know whether or not you'll like it in the first few.

Deathnote: Dark. More of a psychological thriller. One of my favorites. Great characters. 37 episodes.

With anime you slightly limit yourself with the 'no sci-fi' clause.

If you can get past that:

Knights of Sidonia

Looking for something very dark and violent, with great animation, and suitable for an adult.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Not joking, you won't be disappointed.

There are a lot of Berserks to pick from... The three movie series. The original series which I have actually never seen, but I have read tells roughly the same story as the movies. Then the new series that just started coming out a year ago, but should definitely be watched after at least one of the other two.

Berserk definitely fits the bill as dark and violent. It probably couldn't be much more so.

BTW, on a side note I got some extra cash and just went ahead and bought all of the issues of the Berserk manga recently. Better than buying them as I go and running into the next issue being out of stock when I get to it. I had been greatly slowed by that for a while. I'm currently on issue 11 with Wyald showing up. I'm guessing that the eclipse is coming soon. There's lots of little details that give a lot more depth to the story than in the anime.

By sci-fi, I really mean that I don't like space stuff - in other words, no anime Star Trek type stuff. Don't mind fantasy, supernatural, demon hunting, etc.

ETA: Watched the first episode of Death Note and Berserk. Both look good. I'll probably binge Berserk and throw in some Death Note here and there to get me started. Thanks for the recommendations.

Berserk has an interesting, original story, at least in the first major arc of the story it is very innovative. I still need to finish the manga to see where it is going ultimately. I first came across it because the first of the movie trilogy is/was on Netlfix. It really does get super violent and fricked up though. When I discovered the movie trilogy a friend told me not to finish it because of how fricked up and "disgusting" it got. I was already intrigued, but of course that piqued my curiosity enough to where I had to make a point of finishing it. It definitely would be beyond what some people can handle though.

It did become too much at the end, IMO.

The first two are great, but the 3rd was just too out there.

Berserk original story really does top everything imo. It's just too bad that the anime versions either leave out important parts of the story, or in the case of the new series has terrible animation. Don't let anyone tell you it's too fricked up, though it does get very brutal at points

I would encourage anyone to read and get caught up on the manga before anything else, but I understand not everyone wants to do that.

Really enjoyed the first Berserk movie (The Egg of the King). I was hoping there would be a full series to watch on Netflix, but they just had the one movie. Looks like Amazon has all 3. That was exactly the type of show I was looking for.
I might watch a bit of Inuyasha as well. Used to catch random episodes here and there on Adult Swim.

You can watch the new Berserk series that just started coming out last year on crunchyroll for free. There are ads though. I think that the second season just started airing in Japan recently. I don't know if it is available in the US yet. You need to finish the movie trilogy first though as it takes place after chronologically.

When I first saw the movie there were some details that didn't make sense to me. Like the flashback that Guts has while unconscious after first meeting Griffith. That only made sense to me after I started reading the manga, and it is actually pretty important to his back story. I don't know if watching the original series that came out in the late 90's would help fill in those gaps or even if you would be able to find it.

Every version of the animated medium does something better than each new iteration I believe, but all of them do something worse than the others and leave out important parts of the story. I really can't believe the new series glossed over the black swordsman stuff and put it in one episode.

The old anime started with old guts after the eclipse and then went to the golden age, which I think is the best way to start it, but left out puck and skull knight among a ton of other important parts.

The movies are just way too condensed, but at least they had skull knight.

I really can't get over the terrible cgi animation of the new series and the movies. At least the new series are moving forward with the story and not just repeating the golden age again. But CLANG! Is so dumb. I don't know whose idea that was.

I'll always recommend the manga over any of the anime versions.

Watched the Berserk Movies, and yea, the third one just got too bizarre. Figured I'd see how the new series started out, and the "animation" is atrocious. Guts doesn't even act like the same character, and now he has a Navi as an annoying sidekick. I give up.

Oh. here's another dark, hyperviolent, non scifi anime you would like, Black Lagoon. It's awesome and only two seasons.

Watched all 3 Berserk movies, and the 3rd one deinitely took a bizarre turn. Wasn't expecting it to border on tentacle porn.
Still enjoyed all 3 - the second movie was the best imo.

Started Hunter x Hunter last night and got sucked in big time. Gets interesting at episode 3. I'm not a huge anime fan and do research before jumping into one but I feel as if it will be a good one.

My favorite anime. It's truly fantastic. You will love the ride.

One mote, if you're watching on Netflix, they don't have all the episodes. They stop at episode 100, and there are another 48 they need to add.
