IMO yes it did, which I enjoyed. Without spoiling anything, you learn a lot about: the nature/effect/purposes of the black goop/bio weapon; where Liz Shaw and David go after Prometheus; what they do when they get there (which is awesome); etc.

As for my sperler-free review, IMO Covenant was in the solid to good range, and I'm an Alien fanboy. While it wasn't great, I do think it had a lot of great moments throughout, including plenty of new "oh wow that's cool" material re: the relationship of the goop to the Xeno. Action was great as mentioned, acting was quality enough, and the ending delivered. And man, some of the "birth" scenes were downright disgusting but awesome CGI.

In terms of negatives, the movie was somewhat disjointed, formulaic (i.e., somewhat the same story we've seen already) and often predictable. As the rest of the prequels and sequels have, Covenant struggled to recapture the intangible "soul" of the original two movies, which IMO is tied to my last point - I really, really miss the animatronics and actor-donned Xenos from the first two (and even used in Alien 3 and Resurrection). It just looks so much more organic and "real" than the CGI-heavy Xenos we got in Covenant.

At bottom, it's certainly an enjoyable watch if you're a fan of the series, with enough "wow" moments throughout to satisfy. It also made me appreciate Prometheus much more.

That wasn't even covered. It was covered however how much David wanted to kill everyone.

IMO this is a good spoiler-free summation from the NY Times review:

quote:

To complain about its lack of ambition would be to misconstrue its intentions. Rather than setting out to conquer new worlds or excavate primal fears, this “Alien” is content to uphold a long-lived and well-regarded brand. Correcting some of the previous film’s mistakes — not enough alien! too much mythological mumbo-jumbo best left to movies with “Star” in the title! — Mr. Scott parcels out carefully measured portions of awe, wonder and terror on the established installment plan. This episode needs to satisfy you just enough to make sure you come back for the next one.

if you are expecting this, don't. What i can tell you is that Scott teased another prequel type movie, that is suppose to dive into what you want answered. Like not a sequel to this, i think maybe an in between this and prometheus

So, in between Prometheus and covenant in time or just in themes? Like a prequel-sequel-prequel?

I'd have to go try and find where I read it. But the impression the I got was post-Prometheus, pre-covenant. Don't hold me to it, because I could have it wrong. But it wasn't a direct sequel to convenant, even though that is planned as well.

Lost interest to even know if some of the dialogue was meant to be anti-God.

Not that any of this is new these days.

If you didn't like Prom 1, u surely won't like this one. And the ending blows.

I realize it's a theory crafted outside of the films, but it's seemingly become accepted by some that the engineers decided to wipe out humanity after Jesus' killing. After pollinating earth, the engineers were returning at various points to "check in" on their creation (as documented/discovered by Shaw and Holloway in Prometheus). As humanity devolved in their eyes, they sent Jesus as the last attempt to reverse humans' devolution (so, yes, Jesus would've been an engineer). Humans then merked Jesus, marking the last straw for the engineers. They were then set to embark from LV-223 to destroy earth, but the contagion got loose and killed all but one. This theory coincides with Prometheus being set in the year 2093 and its crew discovering the dead engineers had been dead for more than 2,000 years.

Maybe it's bullshite, but it seems to be heavily implied in Prometheus, despite the fact that Shaw is still trying to figure out why at the end...

I believe you are correct. Scott intimated at some techie conference that the next Alien installment, tentatively titled Alien: Awakening, would be set between Prometheus and Covenant. Then, depending on the success of this one and that one, he would do up to another 3 before backing into Alien. Meh, count me in.
