I personally prefer Last of the Mohicans and Collateral over Heat. Heat has many awesome scenes, but it's also a bloated mess for much of the movie. If you edited out 30 mins or so it would be top notch IMO, as it is it's still a very solid movie.

IMO, Thief is really an entirely different kind of movie. As is Last of the Mohicans. Mann really is a stylist who happens to be able to provide substance.

LOTM is awesome in its own right. Heat gets the nod because of Pachino's character. Not a knock on DDL at all, but Pachino is the ultimate badass/alpha dog in this.

It is bloated by almost a half hour, but it gives you that much more time in the universe Mann creates.

Just finished. fricking awesome. We have an awesome sound system too so that was good.

Side note:

Now I know where Ben Affleck got the plot for The Town. (unless it was a book)

Yeah, there are definitely some similarities. The ending in particular is almost directly from Heat.

Long movie but a great movie.

The shootout in the middle of the movie is my favorite part. Crank up the tv or surround sound if you have it!

When people first get surround sound systems, this is the movie (and the bank scene) that I tell them to watch. It's incredible.

Went over to my ex-wife's house this a.m. and she's watching the shootout scene in Heat. I watch until Sizemore gets shot and get up to leave. Damn, she threw a quickie on me.

I love that movie.

Yeah, Affleck said on HBO he took a lot of elements from Heat, and if The Town was even half as good as Heat he considered it a success. Also the guys that made Takers said they drew all of their inspiration from Heat. It really is the epitome for bank robber movies.

I was waiting for this as well.

The ending of this movie really bugged me cause Diniro's charcter was always so disciplined, but he let his anger toward Wayne Gros get the best of him. He could have gotten away, and a man with that much discipline would not have let Wayne Gros cost him everything. He could have always hunted him down later.

I've hated Waingro in every movie he's ever done. Mainly because of Heat, but he's usually a dirtbag in most movies anyway.

The essence of DeNiro's behavior is instilled in your very response. DeNiro is so disciplined to the code of crime that he can't bear to let Waingro, the last loose end, off the hook. At the end of the day, the life of crime trumps everything else. He is what he is.

Roger Van Zant: What are you doing?
Neil McCauley: What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone.
Roger Van Zant: I don't understand.
Neil McCauley: 'Cause there is a dead man on the other end of this frickin' line.
