I was just asked by my parents, who started watching the show, "Who is Jon Snow's mother? Is it important?" I am wondering how to answer this in order to make the story more interesting and surprising for them. Do I just say Wylla (which Ned has already said in the show)? Do I say, "I don't want to spoil it?" WWYD?

On a side note, my mom texted and said "lots of illegitimate children in this TV show."

Just say:

Oh, my sweet summer children. All in good time. All in good time.

Just say you'll find out later and shut the hell up.

Some woman, no doubt. Most of them are.

Is it important?

Whoever Jon's mother had been, Ned must have loved her fiercely, for nothing Catelyn said would persuade him to send the boy away.

How far in the show are they? If they haven't got to Ned's death, then tell them that Ned will tell Jon when he meets up with him next.

Just tell them you don't think they've ever actually said who his mother was. Technically, it's true and it won't clue them in to it being pretty important.

Best way to handle things like this is to lie. Act like it isn't important and hope they put it out of mind

Whenever it's revealed, they will be way more shocked than they've ever been and look at you like WTF? But they will thank you for it.

One of my biggest pet peeves on this board is when someone starts watching the show and 100 posters tell them "don't get attached to any characters!!!"

Even though that's not a spoiler technically, that person will now be on guard and won't get emotionally invested in these characters which is 75 percent of the fun. I went into the show completely blind and I would've been pissed if someone told me most of the major characters die. I probably would've never gotten as into it as I am.

I'd hate to see what she thinks of Cersi/Jamie. Or of the Ramsey/Reek stuff when she gets to it.

shite drives me insane

Most every death has had a solid reason for occurring and has advanced the story. People act like they're just killing characters off for fun - such a casual fan take.

It's a show that focuses on the story and not the characters. No beaming down to a planet and everyone knows the guy in the red shirt gets it because we can't kill the star.

I am always so jealous of people who are watching Thrones for the first time. It would be great to relive that emotional roller coaster. I will say that I enjoyed the hell out of my first series re-watch before season 5 came out. Greatest show of all time IMO.

Just tell your mom to enjoy the gay sex and she'll find out in due course.

The book culture was the best. We all carried the deaths in our hearts waiting for our friends to get to that point so they could also carry it. It was part of the fun of being a fan.

You can tell her the truth about John's mother, it really is not that improtant. His father's identity is much more important..........

Everyone assumes Ned to be the father, but in reality it is Lyanna. Either way he still has Stark blood. The father's blood opens up whole new oportunities....
