Yeah, he had an out of body experience while in the hospital. I think he actually went to the afterlife or whatever, but he recovered.

And probably for the best - let us recall that Selleck used to be up for the same roles as Harrison Ford, most notably, Indiana Jones.
While he is a little younger than Ford, he does turn 70 next year.
Just as there is no audience for a 70 year old Indiana Jones or Han Solo, there is, likewise, little reason to see a 70 year old Thomas Magnum being shuttled from his retirement home to a casino on the weekend.
