A lady's question about 007 (Bond Movies Discussion)

So, the boyfriend is a pretty big James Bond fan. Has watched them all several times and is obviously pretty excited about Spectre coming out.
I have watched maybe two Bond movies in my lifetime (Goldfinger and GoldenEye) and while I'm not opposed to them I've just never really got into them.
So here are my questions:
1) In order to understand Spectre, what do I need to watch beforehand? I assume the other Daniel Craig films would be on the list but is there any of the older Bonds that I need to watch for this specific purpose?
2) It's my understanding that the older movies are mostly stand alone-ish type movies and not so much like the newer Craig movies where you kind of need to watch them all to get the over arching story. Is this true for the most part?
TIA

They're pretty stand-alone. I'd highly suggest watching Casino Royale and Skyfall. Quantum of Solace optional. Casino is a FANTASTIC bond film and Skyfall is pretty great in general.
ETA:
Quantum is an angry overreaction to things that happened in Casino... but not really must-watch.

With Mr White coming back in Spectre, I would say that Quantum of Solace is also a must see. I didn't mind it so much. With the way they are doing it, I would say just watch the Craig films in order. They have a different feel, and a different way of telling the story.
Though if you want an idea on Spectre beforehand, watching the old movies would help

I forgot she was asking relative to Spectre...
Yeah. Just watch the new ones. You won't be disappointed.

Just the Craig ones

Mostly, but there are references to prior events in some of them. For instance, Bond gets married in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which came out in 1969. It's still referenced in For Your Eyes Only (1981) and License to Kill (1989). Also, there is a steady recurring cast of characters throughout the 20+ years of the original that gives them a lot of continuity...something the new ones miss badly, IMO (although it's not their fault). License to Kill is basically about Bond's relationship with Felix Leiter who is in virtually every Bond movie.

And this is what I point to every time some idiot says "Every Bond actor is a different James Bond. James Bond is just a code name for an MI6 agent"
I can't tell you how many times I've banged my head against a wall trying to explain that to people.

You can tell those types couldn't name more than half of the Bond films off the top of their head. No real Bond fan (dare I say purist?) actually believes that.
